Although he is best known for his dynamic exploits on his drum kit, he is a far more than a monster on the stage riser. He has spent countless seasons on a wide variety of percussion instruments. Nik is skilled on the marimba, as well as conga, bongo, and bata drums. After multiple trips to Cuba, it comes as no surprise that Nik Hughes is thought of as “vicious” when playing Afro-Cuban rhythms on hand drums. His appetite for knowledge in his field and blessed natural abilities allow him to deliver an authentic and always precise sound. For almost a decade, Nik played in a band with a handful of his boyhood friends. The band, 33 West, played nearly 1500 shows, in over 30 states as well as the Bahamas. As a founding member of the band, Nik’s duties and responsibilities were multifold. He was not only the heartbeat of the band, but its’ booking agent, manager, bookkeeper, driver and sometimes band mother. The years on the road served as a buffer for Nik’s live presence. His style is now polished, and it shows. He is the consummate performer, catching the eye of the listener as well as making them move. The time he spent in 33 West also advanced his composition of drum tracks. Nik crafts overpowering beats that surround the listener and at the same time contain depth and sensitivity. He is at home playing the drums live, and in the studio. Whether it was for his previous band’s albums or stepping up to pinch-hit for a local producer or band. Nik has the chops to play sheet music ultra clean, while being loose enough to record a song after only a few takes; making it sound as if he had been playing it for years.Nik’s arranging skills are often on display in studio. This quality is extremely valuable in the recording process. He is a true artist and a producer’s dream. “Nik is truly my first choice in the D.C. Metro area when I need a drummer, no matter what style of music,” says producer Marco Delmar. He is comfortable performing Rock, Pop, Hip-Hop, Funk, Jazz, Country, Folk and Latin styles.Nik is striving for perfection in percussion. He possesses all of the tools that a complete percussionist needs. Plus, he has an extra dose of talent, desire and knowledge to be one of the best. In the end, he’s a humble drummer’s drummer. Nik is simply a young man with undeniable skills and without question the next big time drummer, behind the next big thing.Mike Smith D & B Publications
