I drop the needle down until my mind is clean.

About Me

Hello, I'm a 39 year old graduate student in English/Cultural Studies at Kansas State University (originally from Nebraska) who's interested in music, world literature, music and literature, film, etc. I've played in a few groups of the power-pop/psychedelic variety over the years, mostly all with an emphasis on vocal harmonies. Some of those are the Davenports, Near South Davenport and the Static Octopus. I also have some ongoing side projects with friends in Minneapolis (Acme MN and Mid-Am). The current DHFR endeavor is a solo effort, however, with only me (and my laptop) to blame for the recordings and performances. It threatens to finally get off the ground this summer and fall. In addition, Pop! Dirigible Records is essentially my own (vanity) record label arm for projects I am involved in. It is about as lo-fi and d.i.y. an operation as you can get, as I do most of the recording, cd packaging, etc. right at home. The Pop! Dirigible stable of artists currently includes Dan Hutt Field Recordings, Near South Davenport, Acme MN and Mid-Am. I will also compile, from time to time, other project recordings that I am involved in from outside (and inside) these groups. These volumes will be entitled "Bullseyes and Elbows," and a lot of this material I'll post on this site. Hope you hear something you like.

Open Karma (Lose the Drama)

Open Karma (Lose the Drama)This is a demo of my newest song in pretty raw form: not properly mixed, sans bass guitar and some vocals, all the usual disclaimers. Nevertheless, I think it’s a pr...

Today

2 Cool Things Happened Today:1) I learned how to meditate and really dug it. 2 hours later, I'm still way mellowed out. And it was free and I can do it anywhere. Now I need a mantra. Thanks, Jane!...

Best Records of 2007

I'm pretty sure some of these albums came out in late 2006, but in any case, they didn't enter my universe until '07. --Amy Winehouse, "Back to Black". I don't know how anyone could seriously argue ...

Best Records of All-Time

Unlike my 2006 list, this list is in fact scientifically proven and without reproach. Of course, the spirit of this list is, without question, biased and subjective, but how else could it be? I will...

Best Records of 2006

Probably like most record collectors, I am both fascinated by and despise arbitrary lists of the year's best albums. Accordingly, I might as well do my own this time. I buy lots of music, so I feel ...
