Twist & Shout

Often when I have had the opportunity to meet my heroes I have been disillusioned or weirded out. Not so with Jorma Kaukonen. The Jefferson Airplane Guitarist and Hot Tuna mainman turned out to be one of the most genuine, sweet guys you have ever met. He came to the store on Sunday afternoon and signed autographs for about 75 people who held his superb new solo album Stars in my Crown, and every manner of Airplane and Tuna memorabilia. We sold a bunch of the CD and I think people were blown away by how approachable and down-to-earth the guy was. The night before I saw Tuna at the Gothic and they played a great show that reminded everyone that musicianship and tradition really do matter. After the signing I was lucky enough to drive Jorma to Boulder and I can tell you the niceness was no act. He is one guy who has kept all his marbles and his health and is able to talk fluidly about the 60’s, the Airplane, his newly adopted daughter, Hybrid cars, you name it. A real mensch as they say. Another day in paradise.

DJ Mark Farina was at Twist & Shout on Saturday, July 7 (yes, 7/7/07) for a live, exclusive DJ set.......his only live appearance in Denver this time around (he played in Boulder later that night). Over 100 people came to watch, and some even danced! He mixed some great music for 2 straight hours, appealing to even the non-DJ crowd that was here shopping. Afterwards, he signed autographs and picked winners for tickets to his show at the Fox. It was really quite a fantastic event!
