Guided by Voices, electric Miles Davis, Can, The Police, Spoon, Neu!, Willie Nelson, Keith Jarrett, Sam Rivers, Mike Watt/Minutemen, Larry Young, Yo La Tengo, The dB's, Johnny Cash, Soft Machine, Joe Jackson, Elvis Costello & The Attractions, The New Pornographers, Pinback, Andrew Hill, Waylon Jennings, Gram Parsons, King Crimson, Tortoise, XTC, Funkadelic, Hendrix, Herbie Hancock, Dave Holland, James Brown, Ornette Coleman, The Kinks, The Beatles, The Who, John Coltrane, Drive-By Truckers, Beulah, The Features, Casper & The Cookies, Charm School, De Novo Dahl, Yum Yum Tree, Ceiling Fan, Hot Young Priest, The Sea and Cake, Terry Riley... I could go on and on, and probably will. Suffice to say if it's New Wave, Power Pop, old funk, 60s Blue Note, 70s ECM, alt- / Outlaw country, or just good old indie rock, it's probably up my alley. Just let it be interesting.
Gimme some Kubrick, Coen brothers and Wes Anderson and I'll be happy. Kudos also to THX-1138, Blazing Saddles, The Usual Suspects, the big trilogies (Godfather, Star Wars, Smokey and the Bandit), Python flicks, and all the ones I'm forgetting right now.
Mainly used for the DVD player. The Simpsons, Python's Flying Circus, 24, and the evening news are exceptions. I've also been getting into Lost recently.
William Faulkner, Barry Hannah, Mark Richard, Padgett Powell, John Kennedy Toole, Fred Chappell, and Robert Penn Warren are old favorites. Recommendations welcome.
John Cleese, John Muir, Thomas Jefferson, Robert Fripp, the guys that discoverd how to make beer and scotch (not at the same time), my dad, my grandfather.
