BFI - British Film Institute National Archive
JAN 2008 - Boot Polish & Waiting for Sunrise have been Acquisitioned to be preserved for long-term heritage. Which basically means it will be saved for ever At the National Archives.
The BFI National Archive is one of the world's greatest collections of film and television. The majority of the collection is British material but it also features internationally significant holdings from around the world. We also collect films which feature key British actors and the work of British directors. There is a wealth of material of every genre from silent newsreels to CinemaScope epics, from home movies to avant-garde experiments, from classic documentaries to vintage television, from advertisements to 3-D films, soap opera to football. The sheer size and diversity of the collection presents us with special challenges.
The archive contains more than 50,000 fiction films, over 100,000 non-fiction titles and around 625,000 television programmes.
As guardians of our vast and growing national film heritage we are acutely aware of the responsibility for ensuring its continued survival. We have made significant investment in new storage facilities in the last 18 months and have also upgraded our existing stores. We are proud of our achievements and believe that film and television have the power to enhance all our lives. The digital age has the potential to offer access to the Archive by greater numbers of people than ever before.

Dear Aneel Ahmad Waiting for Sunrise: The filming in Lahore was very well done. It's a very disturbing subject and some of your images are hard to take, but it's a raw and effective piece in its short length. I don't think it should be longer. It's succinct, makes it's point and I'm not sure it would work in a longer form. In short, keep going. You're a long way from getting where you want to be. I wish you well. Best, Alan Parker (Sir Alan Parker Writer/Producer/Director) The Wall (Pink Floyd), Angel Heart, Mississippi Burning, The Commitments, Evita.
Aneel, I watched 'Waiting for Sunrise' - powerful content, it leaves its mark and I agree that it cries out for a longer documentary. I congratulate you on your tenacity and passion to make this project a reality. I wish you the best of luck with your endeavor. Regards Simon (Simon Hewlett -Universal Managing Director uk)

Rocky: Ah come on, Adrian, it's true. I was nobody. But that don't matter either, you know? 'Cause I was thinkin', it really don't matter if I lose this fight.
It really don't matter if this guy opens my head, either. 'Cause all I wanna do is go the distance. Nobody's ever gone the distance with Creed, and if I can go that distance, you see, and that bell rings and I'm still standin'
I'm gonna know for the first time in my life, see, that I weren't just another bum from the neighbourhood.

Will: See, the sad thing about a guy like you is in 50 years you're gonna start doin some thinkin on your own and you're gonna come up with the fact that there are two certainties in life. One, don't do that. And Two, you dropped a hundred and fifty grand on a f***** education you coulda got for a dollah fifty in late charges at the public library.
Chuckie: No. No, no no no. F*** you, you don't owe it to yourself man, you owe it to me, 'cause tomorrow I'm gonna wake up and I'll be 50, and I'll still be doin' this shit. And that's all right. That's fine. I mean, you're sittin' on a winnin' lottery ticket. You're too much of a pussy to cash it in, and that's bullshit. 'Cause I'd do f*****' anything to have what you got. So would any of these f*****' guys. It'd be an insult to us if you're still here in 20 years. Hangin' around here is a f*****' waste of your time. (GOOD WILL HUNTING)
TUPAC SHAKUR, One of the main Pioneers for leading BLACK ARTISTS and HIP/HOP GANGSTER THUG LIFE CULTURE back in 1995. This IS DUE to the Social & economical deprivation within the black 'depressed' areas such as LA and New York! Not to PROMOTE violence, HATRED or Racial tension. A GENUINE TRUE ROLE MODEL!
THESIS ON - THUG LIFE BRITISH IDENTITY & CHAVS....BABY!:) by aneel ahmad. In the early 1990's The UK first experienced a wave of Gangster Rap from the US. These Rappers (such as 2pac, Ice T, Biggie Smalls, Ice cube, Dr Dre etc) utilised explicit language lyrics to express their views on social and economical deprivation within the black 'depressed' areas such as LA and New York. This was their way to communicate with the Media, and the American government on the racial tensions between White and Black people. As a teenager living in Longsight (Manchester) in the mid 1990's, I noticed that most Black & Asian people adopted this culture/music and 'Thug Life' style. I lived in one of the poorest districts in Longsight where Crime & Violence was at its peak. When HIP HOP culture arrived Minority groups felt they could relate to the issues these rappers were addressing in their music, I.e. racial differences between white and black people. These second generation youths generally came from labour backgrounds, and pretty much lived in poor inner city areas all across the UK. Growing up as a child in the 80's and youth in the 90's, most Black and Asian people experienced a high proportion of racial discrimination. This forced them to rebel and not remain victims of racial discrimination Hence; living the Thug life, Gangster. Thug Life - Gangster' firstly we need to understand what Thug life is NOT!
A)Wear a baseball cap and look menacing.
B)Scare little kids on street corners.
C)Smoke or drink all day
D)A pram pusher who has a baby by the time they are 16 or younger. (in order to claim benefits from the government)
E)No education
F)Claiming benefits from the government, so they don't have to work (as mentioned above)
G)Wear fake designer clothes to look 'cool'
H)Speak in an Ali G type of language.
I)Wear fake gold to look as if the individual has plenty of money.
J)Spend half their time in a catatonic state; due to alcohol or drug abuse.
I could probably go on all day, and I'm sure most of you could contribute to the list (above). As you have probably noticed the above comments sounds more like a 'Chav' or 'Scally' list. Over the years this 'thug life' style has been watered down with people (We now call Chav's) trying to emulate this life style. Some being White Middle Class youths. Others are under the illusion that they look cool and appear intimidating. Maybe, it's a sign of their own insecurities. What baffles me is how can someone be proud of being poor, living in a shi**y area, and are lacking a good education? thug life is usually; or posses the following
A)Education (doesn't have to be academic)
B)Educate (their kids)
C)Understands their Business & Market
D)Makes their own opportunities.
E)Accumulates, Expands.
F)Well presented, Polite, respectful.
G)Is well off and probably drives a nice car and lives in a nice house. In summary don't confuse a wannabe to Thug Life, Gangster. Why, because a real gangster doesn't want to attract attention! And probably lives next door to a well represented person in your community!
ABOVE-(MOVIN AS A MASSIVE 1995/96) Channel 4 Documentary the Lloyds Bank Film Challenge.
OK GUYS this is my PATH INTO THE FILM INDUSTRY. Around 95-96 Myself and a school friend wrote a synopsis about Street Culture for British Young Asians. It actually got short-listed and from there we worked with a professional independent film company and produced a ten-minute short. It was screened on Channel 4 and it actually did quite well.
It went to a number of film festivals, but I was quite young then 20 years old (I was very, very hot tempered and a very aggressive young man in the 90's emotionally, spiritually and physically), As New filmmakers we were just learning about how to make projects.
Anyway that's how i ended up in the film industry. My friend he went onto film school etc etc, but I haven't any academic qualifications, so I couldn't, even though it was something I really wanted to do.
We lived in Levenshulme (Manchester) in a 2 bedroom flat where 4 brothers slept in one room. My Dad worked at a cardboard Factory and my mother worked at home on a sewing machine, like most asian parents back the 80's 90's to support their families.
Funny watching Movin as Massive has brought back loads of memories. I was always embarrassed to bring my friends to my house because, I didn't want them to know that I lived in such a shit hole lol:)
Anyway the lack of education my side stopped me from going film school or any school lol:) (So please educate yourselves people, knowledge is really the key to success)
Besides It was my own fault I only have myself to blame for wasting so many years due to ignorance. As I was hanging around with a lot of bad guys that time getting into a lot of trouble and crime. So for me films was and still is escapism from poverty and crime.
MOVIN AS A MASSIVE - Winner of the 1996 Race in the Media Award for Best Youth Programme. Nominated by the RTS in 1996 for Most Innovative Film/Video and winner of the Channel 4/Lloyds Bank Film Challenge. Directed by Ninder Billing and produced by Andy Porter and Madeline French for Compulsive Viewing. All the guys in MOVIN AS A MASSIVE are my good friends. (I was 20 years old at the time of filming!!!!!)

The quirky Charley Says animated series, with the warning growls voiced by the late Kenny Everett, delivered often-stark messages in a darkly comic way. Created by Richard Taylor Cartoons, the garbled meows of the ginger cat were later sampled by UK dance act The Prodigy for the 1991 Top 10 hit Charly.
.. ..
Further credence was given to the Charley series in 2005 when it was voted 95th on the Channel 4 TV special 100 Greatest Cartoons. In recent poll conducted by the BBC News Website in association with The National Archives and The Central Office of Information (COI), the Charley cartoons were voted The Nations Favourite Public Information Film.
I wanted to include a SONG from RAJ KAPOOR's FILM MERA NAAM JOKER. This track is one of my dad's favourite's. He travelled by Ferry as an immigrant to Britain in the early 60's. My dad told me that he remembered listening to these songs on a cold, cold frosty day in London. Enjoy!
Mera Naam Joker (1970) Directed by Raj Kapoor
Raju is a joker, a clown. It is what he is and what he always shall be. As his life story unfolds in three chapters, from his school days to the circus to the streets, he must always make people laugh and be happy, no matter how unhappy he is within. Along the way, Raju loves and loses, but must always keep a smile on his face because, in the words of his circus manager, "The show must go on." Over six years in the making, "Mera Naam Joker" is Raj Kapoor's semi-autobiographical story of the life, love, and philosophy of an entertainer
LEE COOPER ADVERT 1979
I just about remember this advert for Lee Cooper Jeans. I remember Gary Newman (Cars) CREATED the Jingle for the Advert Dont be a dummy. Kinda spooky with the Green Eyes dont you think. LOL:() I love this advert.
APPLE MACINTOSH 1984 ADVERT
This for me is the BEST advert ever made. Directed by Sir Ridely Scott after the time of Blade Runner and based on George Orwells 1984. This is just GREATNESS. This was the commercial that introduced the Apple Macintosh Computer to the world,
"Big Brother" "Today, we celebrate the first glorious anniversary of the Information Purification Directives. We have created, for the first time in all history, a garden of pure ideology, where each worker may bloom, secure from the pests purveying contradictory thoughts.
Our Unification of Thought is more powerful a weapon than any fleet or army on earth. We are one people, with one will, one resolve, one cause. Our enemies shall talk themselves to death and we will bury them with their own confusion. We shall prevail!"
Announcer "On January 24th, Apple Computer will introduce Macintosh. And you'll see why 1984 won't be like 1984."

Stanley Kubrick stated that when you make films, you should always try make a miniature film (of two or three minutes) and figure out the mechanics. Later on the process is always the same. So if you're working on Titanic, and you've got, god knows, about 10,000 people on your set and then you've got a film that you're making with 50 people, the principals are still the same) I love many film & Television Directors - Sir David Lean, Ken Loach, Sir Ridley Scott, Mike Leigh, George.A.Romero, Guy Ritchie, Satyajit Ray, Peter Watkins (Doc Film-maker), Stephen Spielberg, David Lynch, Quentin Tarantino, Mike Figgis, David Cronenberg, Federico Fellini, Terrence Malick, Anthony Minghella, Madhusudan Rao V, Martin Scorsese, Spike Lee, Mira Nair, Ram Gopal Varma, Orson Welles,

James Ivory, Robert Rodriguez, Sergio Leone, Akura Kurosawa, Guru Dutt, Michael Winterbottom, Christopher Nolan, Mani Ratnam, Michael Mann, Steven Soderbergh, Sir Alan Parker, David Fincher -Loads more directors these are just a few from the top of my head:) Battaglia di Algeri, La (1966) Dir Gillo Pontecorvo. The Battle of Algiers" is simply one of the greatest films every made. If film making can be about truth as well as fantasy, then this is the Movie for you! It combines brilliant photography, crisp direction, an intriguing plot and some very fine acting. Throw in a terrific music score, splendid editing, impressive special effects and the best example ever of docudrama style production and you have a masterpiece of film making. Three O'Clock High (1987 dir by Phil Joanou)This has got to be one of the best kept comedy secrets of the 80's. If you can get your hands on this movie watch it lol:) I love this movie....A high school nerd, Jerry Mitchell (Siemaszko) is assigned to write a piece for the school paper about new boy Buddy Revell (Tyson), who is rumored to be a psychopathic nutcase. When Jerry accidentally touches Buddy, he says that they must fight in the parking lot at 3pm. Jerry will just about do anything to avoid the confrontation. MAGIC 1978 Dir Sir Richard Attenborough Wow Magic is one of those creepy psychologial Horrors.Anthony Hopkins plays Corky, an earnest but failed magician who spices up his act with a ventriloquist dummy called Fats, after which he rises to almost fame. However, Fats has developed a mind of his own and wants to control his master. As a filmmaker one of the Artists that i am visually influenced by is the great Salvador Dali (1904 1989) The Persistence of Memory (1931) is one of Dali's most famous paintings. There is something special about this Artist! www.salvadordalimuseum.org THE VIDEO DEAD 1987 DIR ROBERT SCOTT (I think im the only SOUL in the UK THAT OWNS THE VIDEO DEAD VHS, Im sure that I am the only person EVER to have rented it since 1988.... i love this Zombie flick) An unlabelled crate from an unknown source is delivered to a house in the woods. The homeowner unwisely accepts the delivery, only to discover it contains a TV set that starts spewing giggling zombies all over the place. When a new family moves into the now-abandoned house, the son discovers the haunted television and is soon told what he needs to do to send the zombies back where they belong. THE OMEGA MAN 1971 In 1977, the American scientist and colonel Dr. Robert Neville (Charlton Heston) is the last man on Earth. All the human race died or became mutants due to the use of biological weapons in a war. During the war, Dr. Neville was researching an experimental vaccine, using the vaccine on himself and it works, making him the last survivor of human race. The race of mutants self-calls 'The Family' and is leaded by the fanatic Matthias (Anthony Zerbe) in the middle-ages standards, without the use of any facility of the Twentieth Century
Even though i dont really watch a lot of Bollywood movie's. This is one of my favourite Bollywood songs "MAN KI LAGAN" from the film PAAP 2003 - Dir Pooja Bhatt. Performed by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan. Play this it's a beautiful track Muqaddar Ka Sikandar Hindi 1978 (dir Prakash Mehra) I used to watch some Bollywood movies when i was a child with my Parents! Oh Sati Rai - is a fantastic song by the GREAT Kishore Kumar! Orphaned and abused at a very young age, a young boy faces the harsh side of life as he struggles to make a living by slaving day and night. He gets empathy from a little girl, Kaamna, in whose house he works. Her dad, Ramnath, does not like him, and asks him to leave. He is adopted by a Muslim woman, Fatima, who decides to name him Sikander. Shortly thereafter, Fatima dies, leaving young Sikander with the responsibility of looking after her daughter, Mehroo. (ROAD HOUSE 1989)This was one of the first 18 cert films i ever watched in the Cinema, I was 15 at the time. Arrrhh man i love this movie.....lol:) Dalton's (Patrick Swayze)The best bouncer in the business. His nights are filled with fast action, hot music and beautiful women. It's a dirty job, but somebody's got to do it. THE EARLY BIRD (Dir Robert Asher 1965) I remember watching Norman Wisdom Films when i was a child in the 80's. The Early Bird is one i love! LOL:) Norman is the assistant helping to run a small, old fashioned dairy which is threatened by a larger, modern organisation. Norman does his best to save the dairy (and his horse) and the usual chaos ensues. I support MANCHESTER UNITED football club. Ying xiong HERO(2002) Director Yimou Zhang In ancient China, before the reign of the first emperor, warring factions throughout the Six Kingdoms plot to assassinate the most powerful ruler, Qin. When a minor official defeats Qin's three principal enemies, he is summoned to the palace to tell Qin the story of his surprising victory. As it flies, it trails a coloured cloth that carries the film's numerous morals and messages which descend upon you like a soft layer of fabric. This is a film that can lift your spirits and have you laughing out in sheer joy as you gaze in wonder at the perfection of the mise-en-scene and cinematography. This is a Fantastic Film. In The Studio with TIAGO for Boot Polish. Ps I'm taking the photo:) Sound Design/Mix: Tiago Sousa

Peter Watkins (born October 29, 1935)

Is an English film and (once) television director. After studying acting at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, began his television and film career as an assistant producer of short TV films and commercials, and in the early 1960s was an assistant editor and director of ..aries at the BBC and turned to amateur filmmaking in the late 1950s. In the mid-60s Watkins was commissioned by BBC-TV to make two feature-length docudramas incorporating a quasi-newsreel style and nonprofessional actors. The second of these, The War Game (1965), graphically portrayed the nightmare of nuclear war and was banned from broadcast. It was subsequently released in theatres and earned a best ..ary Oscar in 1966. Watkins enjoyed modest success with the commercial feature film, Privilege (1967), but has subsequently worked primarily in the ..ary genre, based in various Scandanavian countries. One of his more recent films, _Resan (1988)_ , is a 873 minute (14 hours) epic that addresses such issues as the arms race and global hunger. All of his films have either been ..ary or drama presented with ..ary techniques, sometimes portraying historical occurrences and sometimes possible near future events as if contemporary reporters and filmmakers were there to interview the participants. The War Game is filmed in a ..ary fashion and looks at the possible effects of nuclear war on the English countryside. The film is notable for its intense power and imagery. It was later nominated for an Academy Award, as well as awarded the 1967 Best ..ary Feature award in Great Britain.

Protect and Survive was the title of a series of booklets and a public information film series produced by the British government during the late 1970s and early 1980s dealing with emergency planning for a nuclear war. The phrase also referred to a wider programme of national civil defence.

The purpose of the programme was to provide members of the British public with instructions on how to protect themselves and survive a nuclear attack. If such an attack had been deemed likely by the Government during any period of international crisis, a copy of the main "Protect and Survive" booklet would have been distributed to every home in the UK whilst the films would have been transmitted on domestic television. The booklet and the films detailed a series of steps to be undertaken by the citizens of the UK to improve their chances of survival during a nuclear attack, including the recognition of attack warning, fallout warning, and all-clear signals, the preparation of a home "fallout room" (fallout shelter) and the stockpiling of food, water, and other emergency supplies. The films, narrated by the late actor Patrick Allen, were similar to the pamphlets, detailing the same instructions using voice-over narration, sound effects, and simple animation. All of the "Protect and Survive" public information films were produced by Richard Taylor Cartoons, which also created the well-known "Charley Says" films for the UK's Central Office of Information.

Movies:

ABOVE a Clip from the film KES.
In my opinion is prob one of the BEST BRITISH FILMS EVER MADE By the FANTASTIC Dir KEN LOACH - KES 1969
Bullied at school and ignored and abused at home by his indifferent mother and older brother, Billy Casper, a 15-year-old working-class Yorkshire boy, tames and trains his pet kestrel falcon whom he names Kes. I suggest you buy this film as its just simply fantastic!
BABEL - 2006 Director - Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu This dude Alejandro is TOP class, he is in my opinion one of the best modern film directors in the world! Babel -Through a series of misunderstandings, interweaves the unfortunate circumstances of a Moroccan, an American, a Mexican and a Japanese family. Interlocking stories, all connected by a single gun all converge at the end and reveal a complex and tragic story of the lives of humanity around the world and how we truly aren't all that different. You have to watch this film and one of his first major movie 21 grams! (Below) SALAAM BOMBAY 1988 Dir - Mira Nair This is one the best and moving films ive seen. Its a the story of a 12-year-old street boy surviving and etching out an existence on the squalled streets of Bombay. The interactions these kids have with each other made me feel I was watching a doco. The kids in India are so much like Chipau and the others depicted in Salaam Bombay its amazing. They all have there individual lives and dreams like us all but are burdened with extreame poverty The Hitcher (1986) Director Robert Harman. If you get to watch this movie the Hitcher the 1986 version watch it, this is a fantastic Horror/Thriller, C.Thomas Howell & Ruger Hauer. Advertisement A young man transporting a car to another state is stalked along the road by a cunning and relentless serial killer who eventually frames the driver for a string of murders. Chased by police and shadowed by the killer, the driver's only help comes from a truck stop waitress. There are 2 exceptionally GREAT films made in this decade by one of the BEST british film directors we have Michael Winterbottom IN THIS WORLD (dir Michael Winterbottom 2002) The Road To Guantnamo (dir Michael Winterbottom & Mat Whitecross 2006)(Nominated for a GRIERSON AWARD 2006)
..
THE EVIL DEAD -dir Sam Raimi. All time classic Horror FILM of the 80's
I love all types of films Especially Romantic Films and Period Dramas... As I'm a bit of a Softy at heart! I love cinema. Anything to do with the 80'S also Zombie Flicks.
(Below) DAY OF THE DEAD IS MY FAV ROMERO ZOMBIE FLICK (1985) Jeff Darling's Page 73 short film. An emotionally driven script which covers a wide range of story telling "What Love is" extraordinary, beautifully shot film. Haunting Visual cinematography. Fantastic (Below) Requiem for a Dream (2000)Dir - Darren Aronofsky Wow this is one of the most surreal and yet genuine films made this decade. The film depicts the lives of four different people living in Brooklyn on their quest for satisfaction in life. It shows the direct and indirect effects that drugs and various addictions have on each of the individuals, and then portrays their downward spirals from the hopes of blossoming dreams into the helpless state of moral and physical decay. A very powerful and visual film not for the faint hearted. (Below) Leaving Las Vegas 1995 - Dir Mike Figgis This is one of my all time FAV movies ever and Mr Figgis has made one of the most powerful and genuine movies of the 90's. Dudes you got to watch this Movie. Ben Sanderson, an alcoholic Hollywood screenwriter who lost everything because of his drinking, arrives in Las Vegas to drink himself to death. There, he meets and forms an uneasy friendship and non-interference pact with prostitute Sera
BELOW SNAKE IN EAGLES SHADOW 1978 Dir - Woo-ping Yuen
This is a great martial arts movie and funny as well. Me and my brother used to watch a lot of martial Arts Movies in the early 90's and this is one of my fav's!!! Jackie Chan is CLASS!
Jackie Chan is a boy who is used as a janitor at his kung-fu school. Jackie Chan can't fight and is always getting bullied by the teachers and pupils. One day an old man helps Jackie train in an art of kung-fu called the ' Snake's Fist '. Jackie doesn't get bullied again. Then Jacki creates his own style and mixes it with the Snake's Fist. His style is based on the movement and actions of a cat. One day the old man is in trouble by a man who does ' The Eagle's Claw' and Jackie helps the old man

Television:

We've all been raised on television to believe that one day we'd all be millionaires, and movie gods, and rock stars. But we won't. And we're slowly learning that fact.(TYLER DURDEN FIGHT CLUB 1999) THREADS Mick Jackson, BBC TV, 1984 In the early 1980s the British government was still printing booklets outlining how to behave in the event of a nuclear strike, and paranoia raged about the possibility of such attacks. Unsurprisingly, the vivid images presented by this docu-drama's depiction of a nuclear onslaught generated arguments and anxiety. Threads swiftly became a national talking point, attracting praise and protest in equal measure. Tales Of The Unexpected is a British television series that originally aired between 1979 and 1988, made by Anglia Television for ITV. The series was an anthology of different tales, initially based on short stories by author Roald Dahl, that were sometimes sinister, sometimes wryly humourous and usually had a twist ending. Chocky was adapted for television in 1984 from the book by John Wyndham. From Thames Television. The series is the story of young Matthew Gore (Andrew Ellams), an intelligent boy from the Home Counties of England who is chosen by a mysterious extra-terrestrial visitor to Earth, Chocky, as a source of information about life on earth. Miami Vice 9/1984 - 5/1989 NBC 1 Hour Colour - 114 episodes Created by Anthony Yerkovich Executive Producer Michael Mann Universal Television. SCUM 1979 - This is the hard and shocking story of life in a British Borstal for young offenders. The film was originally made as a BBC play but it was banned before ever being shown. So 'Alan Clarke' and 'Roy Minton' got it re-made as a film. This is a tough and brutal film and should not be viewed lightly. Brush Strokes UK, BBC, Sitcom, Colour, 1986 Starring: Karl Howman, Gary Waldhorn, Elizabeth Counsell An Esmonde and Larbey sitcom set in south London and depicting the (mostly) amorous adventures of a good-looking, wisecracking house painter, Jacko. He was a sort of Alfie-type on the surface: a seemingly happy-go-lucky, uncomplicated womaniser, but part of Jacko's charm was his sincerity and tendency genuinely to fall for the women he pursued. )
