OOOoooh heaven is a play on words.

About Me

I'm studying for my PhD in English at Durham. My research is about narrative and the afterlife in twentieth-century fiction. Home | Browse | Search | Invite | Film | Mail | Blog | Favorites | Forum | Groups | Events | Videos | Music | Comedy | Classifieds

My Interests

Knitting, crochet, crosswords, scrabble, backgammon, live music, live comedy, quizzes, vegetarian food, baking, sewing, galleries and museums, and reading a stupid amount of books and Love It magazine.

I'd like to meet:

People I already know in real life, knitters, Newcastle and North London bands, westcountry oddballs, philanthropic millionaires.

Music:

When I'm working I like GY!BE, Radiohead, Four Tet and Sigur Ros. When I'm not I like Belle and Sebastian, Ben Folds, Regina Spektor, Rilo Kiley, Franz Ferdinand, and other poppy singalong music with good words and a sense of humour. And Bright Eyes. And Radiohead. A lot.

Movies:

Fight Club I think.

Television:

University Challenge. I don't watch that much telly but I love radio: The Moral Maze, The Write Stuff, Brain of Britain, Ed Reardon, The Now Show and Start the Week on Radio 4, and Russell Brand and Phill Jupitus on Radio 6.

Books:

I have read a lot of books. Probably my favourite is David Foster Wallace's Infinite Jest or Alasdair Gray's Lanark or Georges Perec's Life A User's Manual. I'm semi-apologetic and guilty about liking huge, quite self-indulgent and pretentious books by white men. I like writing and talking about books a lot too.

I just found my teaching file and had my teaching assessment (unfortunately, not in that order)

Ok, a week ago me and Ali annoyed everyone in the Arts and Humanities postgrad workroom by messing around with his poster and making up business cards for the department to buy for us.  In a mass...

I hate my computer

This morning I got up at 6am to get four hours writing in before I went to work.  Somehow, because I was so tired probably, I managed to not save the stuff to disk that I'd been working on as a f...

You wish I'd cooked your tea...

I made soup, bread rolls and weird vegetarian sausage roll things which weren't very successful.  I had a pastry disaster as well and had to throw the first load away because it kept cracking; I ...

Mad swans doily

Should I make this?  It's absolutely crazy but I kind of like it, just for the complete impracticality and ugliness.  I have such a weakness for utterly ridiculous things, especially in croc...

Ben Folds :D

Last week we went to see Ben Folds.  I freaked out because there was a power cut at the station (and at Matt's house so we had to get ready in the dark: that was pretty funny) so we had to get th...

Oh look an invitation to my book launch!

I kind of wish I could go to this: it would probably rank among the most surreal experiences of my life....

AHRC interesting development

I was cruising the AHRC website today (wondering whether the effort involved in making another decent application this year was actually worthwhile and then being sucked into crushing hopelessness jus...

Alice's Adventures with Dye and a Microwave

Ok so I got home the other night and decided to dye stuff.  I had some hand-spun left over from my fetchings and wanted to dye that, and decided I'd had white gloves long enough for them to get d...
