About Me

Back home..
Growing up in South America..s hugest metropolis Sao Paulo, Ana Flavia acquired a degree in Publicity and Promotion, started her very own hairdressing salon and worked as a fashion stylist assistant, after fully forming as a pianist. This classical accent, though, headed to fertile dialogues firstly with rock..n..roll, secondly with electronic music. Henceforth, the will to build mixes that European and South American crowds all over have had a chance to enjoy during the last years takes us back to Hell..s Club, the venue that sparked off electronic club culture in Brazilian soil through the nineties. It was there that Ana Flavia..s habitual rocking..n..rolling all night to the riffs of bands such as Sonic Youth and Pixies synchronised with the rise of house and techno, emerging in avatars like Underground Resistance, Underworld and Laurent Garnier. The trip-hop boom has also supplied a great deal of inspiration for her .. Tricky, Massive Attack and Portishead songs as main sources .. as well as an intense living of the eighties .. which can be summarized in figures as Kraftwerk, Devo, New Order and Depeche Mode. It was time for a whole new perspective: piano pieces, guitar chords, Bristol..s trip-hop pioneers, her eighties background and the brand new sounds of techno and house merged into an amalgam of references, and a desire for her to collect records and to DJ, by the end of the nineties, came rather spontaneously.

Sounds Like: Electro Minimal House Rock

Clubs, clubs, clubs
She has gone through most of the main clubs in Sao Paulo, either as a DJ or as a promoter, counting on the support of DJ-friends such as Paula, Mau Mau, Pil Marques and Glaucia Mais Mais. ..Combustivel.., at Lov.e Club; ..1234U.., at Pix; ..Pif Paf.., at ampgalaxy; ..Kat Club.., which took place at Mood Club; and ..Cio.., promoted at clubs Stereo and D-Edge, respectively, were some of the most remarkable. Ana Flavia has also been a regular DJ at fashion events in the city, such as Sao Paulo Fashion Week, Semana de Moda and Hot Spot, as well as at parties supported by brands such as Vogue magazine, Telefonica, Smirnoff and Campari. During all these years, Miss Kittin, Octave One, Vince Watson, Oxia, Mateo Murphy, Vitalic, Fred Everything, Alexander Kowalski and Raz Ohara have been some of her colleagues at these events held in Sao Paulo.

Electro and break pulses flirt with 4x4 beats, be them discrete and minimal, be them robust and jackin... Groovy bass and guitar lines come through blending funk and rock..n..roll, inaugurating subtle dynamic changes, swimming through romantic pools. Numerous cadences and moods, always sensitive and emotional, yet dancefloor oriented, head to a bigger picture which house the mixes under a unified concept: positive, optimistic, life-affirming music in the most wide-eyed of senses. This is Ana Flavia: the surprise of travelling; here, though, the unknown does not sound daunting; it has the extent of an invigorating invitation.

Soundtracking
No adjective is more precise to characterize Ana Flavia..s mixes than cinematographic. Strongly touched by the sounds of filmes such as Stanley..s Kubrick ..2001 .. A Space Odyssey.., Jean Pierre Jeunet..s ..Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain.., Wolfgang Becker..s ..Good bye, Lenin.. and Hans Weingartner..s ..The Edukators.., it is thinking of her presentations as soundtracks that she turns all tracks into a cohese and coherent plot. And just like in cinema, you can expect the unexpected.

When in Sao Paulo..
When Ana Flavia is not at home with her beloved pets Ozzy and Justine, there..s a chance you will find her playing at her current residencies in Sao Paulo. One of them, held at club Vegas, is a thematic night called ..Mafia.., inspired by gangster films. DJs Andre Juliani and Pedrinho Dubstrong are her team-mates in this project. At Bar 8 you can check out a party called ..Evangeline.., in which she counts on her friend Nega to bring the noise. Focused on hip hop, soul and funk, ..Evangeline.. associates club culture and street art. There..s also ..Plus Plus.., set up at club A Loca, where she goes techier with her long-time friend Glaucia Mais Mais. It is also frequent to find Ana Flavia playing at some of the hot nights in the city, such as Clube Belfiori and D-Edge, where she presents some of the freshest rock bands around, as well as takes away the dust from some Blondie, Pretenders, Bauhaus and Siouxsie records. If visiting Sao Paulo, you are very welcome to show up at one of these and say hi to her.
