Taste Of Garlic is a Punk, Funk, Rap, Rock group which has been rocking the gulf coast for over 10 years. It all started when the notorious Stoney Koon met BD on the front porch of the Fart Institute for smoke break. They had a chat and got to be friends. BC had only recently relocated to H-town from Miami Beach where he was formulating a business plan for a scooter rental/pinball arcade, and once back in town he had hooked back up with his hometown boys. When Stoney once asked BD for a ride home, he directed him to the home of The Drummer- B Holland. It was there that the miasmic mixture of metal, funk, rap, punk, and cannibis was strewn together.
It was a magical time, because in 1991 nobody had yet heard the watermark album "Check Your Head", the Chili Peppers had only just broken through into the mainstream, and the corporatized new-school "grunge" was poking its head out from the womb of the as-yet undiscovered (un-pillaged) Seattle scene. What was intended to be a mixture of James Brown, Jane's Addiction, Dizzy Gillespie, Led Zeppelin, and N.W.A., was instead the ghastly and fortuitous blend that soon became what is Taste of Garlic- that same intended mixture but with a little paprika and scent of butt methane.
The original line-up consisted of B Holland on drums, BD on guitar, Fat Muff on bass, and the vox shared between Stoney and BC. But, lo, it was not meant to be, and a shakedown occured wherein we found J Schneider lurking in the shadows, waiting for a chance to pounce upon the stage and put his leg, all the way up to his waist, through the floor. Stoney placed his bets on a career in engineering and real estate and headed for the hills of Southern Cali.
This was to be the line-up which would ineffectually change the face and smell of Rap-Rock, though that very same category would become a niche and be ravaged well before the end of the twentieth century. Many "rap-rock" bands have come and gone, and the genre- if you will- still remains in the mainstream and is a commercially viable product for the industry. We weren't there first, but we were in there real good and deep and we had a most exceptional experience participating in Houston's third or fourth renaissance alongside outstanding acts like Dinosaur Salad, 30footFALL, Wishbone Bush, Neckbone, CrazyKilledMingus, and countless others.
From 1991 to 1999 was a golden era for Houston and its people, local music-wise. Besides local talent, a wealth of top-notch entertainment came into its own and travelled through our town, hitting landmark venues like Fitzgerald's, The Axiom, The Vatican/Abyss, Unicorn, etc. To this day, Taste of Garlic plays the occasional reunion show, but you have to keep your nose fine-tuned to the scent of butt and ancient coffee grounds or you could miss it.
*BE WARNED* Garlic has re-grouped and is resuming playing shows in early 2006, April 1st, 2006 to be exact, bringing you a taste of what was hot and fresh TEN YEARS AGO, so have Sherman set your Wayback Machines and get ready to get these on a regular basis once again!!!
