Oh, and did I mention Tupac?? I'm from a slightly different era than the teens of today, although I'd consider them the same generation because I have teenage siblings. What the young girls hear on the radio today is different from what I heard on the radio. Although the word "nigga" has been around as far back as I can remember, where I'm from (East Palo Alto, CA) and what I witnessed, being born in '84, is a different world from kids and teens today. When I heard the word "blood" used, it was usually amongst OGs and to me, it meant brother, because they used it as a term of endearment. The wheels in my child mind processed "blood" to mean family, irony intended. I rarely heard the word "nigga" b/c my 2 and a half square mile city substituted it for "rogue", not for lack of better term, it's just a word that always has been and always will be East Palo Alto and Menlo Park. I watched Queen Latifah boldly declare "Who you callin a BITCH?!" in her song U.N.I.T.Y. I watched Kid N' Play movies, that included MC battles and Hip-Hop dance battles. I watched cats get Nike signs cut on the back of their fades, swear the new kicks out really made u jump higher, and shoot ducks on the old school Nintendo game w/ the gun, Duck Hunt. I watched MC Lyte rock mics to sleep. I watched TLC embody the shit outta some "female power" in their swagger and set new trends, and their songs addressed fake friends, romance, safe sex, etc. Left-Eye was loud, crotch-grabbin, dancin, etc. A group of 3 women and they all each had their own style. Young girls looking up to them took that in, it wasn't about breakn a nigga for the most change in his wallet, although they did address tha niccas quite well, too. TLC was sexy and at the same time, they were more than sexpots when I was most impressionable. When I was a kid, female rappers rapped about more than sickin' duck (reverse vowels), were creative, lyrical, and swaggerish. Da Brat was HARD AS HELL, u couldn't tell her nothin. She definitely didn't need to hide behind sex or skimpy clothing, but sho'll did step it up and show that other side later on in her career. And how can u tell Keyanna Bean to set her standards for rap/music any lower than the aforementioned? Is she on that super-duper black woman shit? U fuckn right, I am. Is she hard? Go listen. Is she sexy? Click on the pics. Does she hide behind sex, skimpy clothing, and duck-sickin' lessons in her lyrics? U be the judge. Is she the perfect example for all young black girls growing up today? No, and as you follow her, u'll learn about her. But is she doin this for all the young black girls growing up w/ little alternatives besides what Clear Channel and Radio One slip thru the airwaves? Yes, and they aint gon' have no choice but to let her in. Will it all be PG13? No, sir, check the Parental Advisory tag on the upcoming album. Will she let her lil' sis get the game from the next female or female rapper? She betta be comin w/ somethn real cuz lil sis already a force to be reckoned w/, poised to take the baton when I pass it, damn that, she don't need the baton. And what can u tell Keyanna Bean when she grew up from lil Keyanna, sittn in her room writin poetry and listenin to Pac telln her to keep her head up? Sheeeeeeiiiit. She came a long way and still got so far to go. Much thanks to the aforementioned artists who paved the way, set the standard, bore originality & creativity, and never settled for the okey-doke, guess times have changed. Stay tuned, folks..help is on the way.My favorite influence:
