Hello world.
I suffer from cacoethes scribendi, a disease from which there is no cure. It causes my fingers to type continuously and makes me psychotically obsessed about keeping pen and paper nearby.
Symptoms include sleepless nights writing poetry, ruminating plot lines while riding the bus, barely comprehending the division between fiction and nonfiction, and sometimes not seeing the day-star for a week.
Some consider it a possibly genetic disorder, and I agree. My sister suffers from it too. So did my grandmother. I have many friends with this disease. Most of them end up reduced to being English Majors or studying other Humanities. Oh, the Humanities!
Serious side effects can occur, including Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Insomnia, and bouts of mania. I have learned to live with OpenOffice opened on my computer and a notepad by my bedside, another in my purse, barely able to break away from my frequent flareups, be they novel or short story.
My current flareup (which some call a project) has incapacitated me through writing a ten-novel-long sci-fi series. It seems this one will be a long convalescence. I'll let you know when I'm over it. Perhaps then I'll be ready to face the world of normal society again. For now, I type all day and ice my fingers at night.
If you couldn't figure out from the whimsical narration above, I love to write. Ask any of my friends, and they will lament over my lengthy emails that force them to dust off their coffee-stained thesauruses as they reminisce over Senior English and try to recall whether or not they actually stayed awake through an entire class.
Since so many have asked, my genre of focus is sci-fi/fantasy. Not that I suffer from a pixie and positronic brain fixation. I have many novels set in the 1800s, one of my favorite time periods, and some set in modern times and loosely based on some of the things I've experienced in my life.
But real life and modern troubles do not hold the same appeal as the vast world of possibilities lying in the fabricated land of fairies, with magic and psionic skills. I enjoy creating entire new universes, where I control all aspects, even weather patterns.
Writers have God complexes. We point our finger and say, "Thou shalt be lauded," and lo, the character is blessed ten-fold. We point our finger and say, "I shall spite thee," and behold, the character lies dead.
Psychologists have proved that many writers throughout history suffered from serious bouts of mania. Heck, that's what writing is! E.L. Doctorow wrote: "Writing is a socially acceptable form of schizophrenia." To leave reality, to become another person, to escape and create our own world! That fantasy dimension in our minds is not perfect, but we know, before we type "The End," the conclusion will exceed whatever finality we can expect here in this dreary world.
I'm also a music geek, joining groups wherever I can. At the moment I play in the Tualatin Valley Community Band . I play trombone usually, but I also know flute, clarinet, trumpet, French horn, euphonium, tuba, guitar, piano, accordion (yes, I confess, I play accordion!), and a bunch of other things. It has become a hobby, learning new instruments.
I played tenor bugle in drum corps for a time. In college, I played mostly French horn and trombone, but I spent a couple years playing marimba, timpani, and other auxiliary percussion. I also took lessons on piano and voice, and fell in love with music theory and composition. But brass kicks ass, so that's what I play most.

My Interests

writing, sailing, playing trombone, baking cookies, pizza, stout beer, mushrooms, anything with garlic, hair braiding, genealogy research, studying languages, reading webcomics, zoning out at the computer

I'd like to meet:

People from Sonora High School, the Santa Ana Winds, my college buddies, fellow band-o's, writers with interesting stories to tell, old co-workers.
Even if you just barely remember me and you're certain there's no way I remember you, guess again. Considering I can't remember what I ate for breakfast, my memory of long ago exceeds even my expectations. Drop me a line, add me to friends, shout HI.

I used to get total strangers come up to me and tell me "Wow, man, you're a very old soul!" I thought it seemed odd, then it got plain unsettling because it kept happening! Now it's kinda intriguing. Either that's the standard greeting for New Age kooks, or there's something interesting about me. Nifty!

You Are an Old Soul
You are an experienced soul who appreciates tradition. Mellow and wise, you like to be with others but also to be alone. Down to earth, you are sensible and impatient. A creature of habit, it takes you a while to warm up to new people.

You hate injustice, and you're very protective of family and friends. A bit demanding, you expect proper behavior from others. Extremely independent you don't mind living or being alone. But when you find love, you tend to want marriage right away.

Souls you are most compatible with: Warrior Soul and Visionary Soul What Kind of Soul Are You?

The Celts

Here's something to delve your mind back into ancient days of mystery and romance! Watch this Enya video, and tell me, in the last scene, does Enya remind you of The Lady of Shallot by Waterhouse.

If you've never seen these British girls play, you're missing out on a truly great experience! I saw them at CSU Fullerton's Trombone Days. They blew me away!

Stoner Trek

This explains Shatner's acting!!! It all makes sense now. It totally all makes sense!

Sigur Rós

Enigmatic, surreal, music that transcends language boundaries (on purpose!) Watch that bow work on the guitar. That's why I love this band, that sound, the tingly reverb, almost organic and yet so electronic! Plus, Jónsi's falsetto can make anyone shiver. About 6 minutes in, watch where he sings into the guitar to produce a chilling electronic quality to the vocals. This is one band I really want to hear in concert one day.
Sigur Rós, please come to Portland!

I Believe in Fairies!
Fairies are real.
I'm pretty sure I've seen them
Flying in the twilight sky,
Or standing tall and proud at midnight,
Their wings like wisps of spider gossamer
Or autumn's ancient oak leaves,
Fragile like summer love, crisp as winter ice.
I slip back into a time long ago,
When Tuatha Dé Danann ruled distant shores
And Banba was a new-cut emerald in the world,
When night was loved and the moon praised.
Sidhe sing, you cannot help but hear
The saltiness in their crystalline tears,
And weep for what was lost in war,
And hope for what will one day be restored.
They stare at you as if peering through thistles and brier,
Their eyes burning with eternal fire
Until they fade back into oblivion
And you hear nothing but smirking laughter. ~ Robyn McKenzie

Music:

New Age, Gothic, Celtic, Middle Eastern ballads, Chants (Hindi, Buddhist, and Gregorian)... Post-rock, rock opera, symphonic metal... Impressionist, Romantic Period, Baroque, Neo-classical... Jazz, big band, swing, dixieland, west coast, fusion... grunge, 70s folk, psychedelic rock

Groups I like: Deva Premal , Ofra Haza , Eyal Golan , Sigur Rós , Evanescence , Explosions in the Sky , Mogwai , The Decemberists , Sleeping Prophet , Björk , Pink Floyd , Eagles , The Beatles , Bob Dylan , Janis Joplin , Creedence Clearwater Revival , REM , U2 , Clannad , Enya , Loreena McKennitt , Danny Elfman , Nobuo Uematsu , Big Bad Voodoo Daddy , Savatage , Trans-Siberian Orchestra , and the wild and crazy Brobdingnagian Bards .

Artist of Note:
In honor of those who still fight for the Orange or the Green, I give you the Brobdingnagian Bards . This fun duo (pronounced brob-din-nahg-EE-en) are based in Austin, Texas, but they have followers around the world. If you like Renfaire or filk music, these guys will have you dancing and laughing. From tunes as old as the Irish hills to filk songs about Buffy and Yoda, these guys give true entertainment to their audience. Autoharp and recorder never sounded so good together! Kilt-clad Marc and Andrew compliment each other like churned butter on freshly baked bread. Marc is the ballad singer, and Andrew comes in with many fun songs and his own playful singing style, or tosses in witty comments to Marc's singing. Of course, they do have a serious side to them too. Irish fighting songs, love ballads, standards of any RenFaire or SCA event... plus an album completely dedicated to Tolkien, definitely one of my favorite to simply listen to and escape into a world of pure imagination. I used their album A Celtic Renaissance Wedding at my wedding. My maids entered to "Shepherd's Serenade," and I walked down the aisle to their version of the Bridal Chorus. Very beautiful music! I urge you to check them out . They have plenty of songs to download for free, but you'll want to buy an album to hear all the great stuff they do!

National Novel Writing Month

Heroes:

Joanne K. Rowling
Known as J.K. Rowling, author of the Harry Potter series, this woman has faced all the odds, from divorce to utter poverty to the death of her mother, and emerged victorious by pursuing a dream. She is a huge inspiration to me as a writer and a woman. I hope she realizes, no matter how humbly she may take it, that she stands out as a beacon of inspiration to people worldwide. Without her, children might never want to pick up a book with more than 100 pages, and adults would forget to keep dreaming.
