About Me

Thanks so much for checking out my space! Hope you enjoy the tunes. I was born in Greenville, SC with a helmet of black hair. My dad is a postal worker and my mama is a nurse. I have 1 older brother and we lived just north of Greenville in a town called Travelers Rest. Dad was a hippie and he had lots of records. Thanks to him I was raised with the good stuff: Beatles, Dylan, Cash, Young, Pink Floyd, the Byrds. When I was a kid, all I wanted to do was read and listen to records and tapes. I was the quiet type kid you could find indoors on a summer afternoon reading "Aesop's Fables" or "The Living Bible" under a red-tinted 60 watt bulb. Mama hung a hummingbird feeder outside my bedroom window and so I spent a lot of time watching their flights to and from the feeder with a pair of binnoculars which began my long-time obsession with birds. When I was 13, dad got me an old Harmony guitar and I started writing songs as soon as I learned the C and G chords. I was influenced by a pretty diverse group of artists ranging from the Talking Heads to Merle Haggard. I just love songs that say something interesting and have the power to make you think about your life or your neighbor's life. Honest songs about being human. Songs that inspire people to change for the better. I remember the first time I read T.S. Eliot's "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock" and how those words and the feelings they expressed completely turned me over. In high school, I started to pay closer attention to the lyrics of folks like Dylan, Lou Reed, T-Bone Burnett and Guy Clark. I also began performing in a few bands with my cousin, SAM THOMAS, and began a 5 year collaboration with my songwriter friend TRAVIS M. (THE DONES, BLACK TRANSFORMER) in a band called GLASS STATUES. From 1996 to 2001 we performed hundreds of shows and recorded 3 EP's, working long weekends on the roads of the Southeast while we were in college. Upon graduation in 2001, the STATUES dissolved and I embarked on a couple of acoustic solo tours on the East coast before moving to Nashville. The following winter saw me back on the road, but this time playing guitar for Uprok Records' Ill Harmonics on their 2002 "Live and Direct" tour. This unique experience of cross country gigs was an intense time of deep soul searching and spiritual reflection. When I went back to Nashville at the tour's completion, I met and fell in love with my wife, Crystal James. Today we live by a lake just east of downtown. I am still writing and recording songs and have just completed a new EP entitled "LOWERED WINGS". I am currently working on a full length record entitled "HALO 'ROUND THE MOON" that will be finished and released by year's end. I also have 5 other records available: SAD SHAPE ep (2005); QUICKEN (2005); WEDDING ALBUM (2004); FORECLOSURE (2003) and AUDIBLE PICTURES (2002)...The purpose of my music is to create good and honest stories that reflect the primary calling of my life: to follow in the ways of Jesus; to live out the Kingdom Story of God, people and place; to show mercy to all mankind and to care for His creation. It's enough to keep me busy for the rest of my life and there's much to learn. Love for God, my wife, family and friends are what I value most. Money don't inspire me and fame is a joke. I believe life is a journey paved with spiritual question marks. I hope that the wonder and mystery of God is somewhere in these songs I sing. I am excited about making records, meeting new friends and finding interesting places to play and participating with others in this Story that is much bigger than anything on this planet.--
