Mana was born on March 19 in Hiroshima, Japan to two music professors. Early in life, Mana began playing trumpet and took up an interest in the unusual. Mana does not like to bring up the past, but from what he has said, he was a metal head in high school. He even got into cosplay from going to his first concert, Motley Crue. By then, Mana was convinced he wanted to learn guitar. In the beggining, learning guitar wasn't all he hoped it would be. His parents bought him an old acoustic, which he never used once he was able to buy his own electric. From there he practiced with several small bands in his area. The first band he really got into playing with was Ves.Tearge, but then moved on to Girl'e.
Once out of high school, Mana met Kozi, who turned into a very close friend and band mate. Mana and Kozi first performed in the band Matenrou with Kozi on vocals and Mana on bass. After they left Matenrou, Mana and Kozi co-founded Malice Mizer, sparking one of the biggest events of Mana's career.
As most of you know, Malice Mizer became huge in Japan's visual kei scene. The band started out in 1992 with Tetsu on vocals, Mana on guitar, Kozi on guitar, Yu~ki on bass, and Gaz on drums. About a year later, Tetsu and Gaz were let go. Malice Mizer had come to a point where they had become a very poor band for about a year and were on the verge of breaking up, until Gackt (vo) and Kami (dr) (RIP) came into the picture. With these two great musicians, Malice Mizer ws once again on the rise. Malice Mizer had full potential to accomplish what they were looking for in their careers and doing it at a fast pace. Merveilles reached up to Number 2 in album charts and the concert which came shortly after the album release sold out in a record of 2 minutes. Things at this time were going great, but during the production of the Le Ciel PV, everything began to flip upside down. Shortly after, the band started getting into disagreements, causing Gackt to leave. Even more tragedy arose when the drummer, Kami, unexpectedly died of a brain hemorrhage in his sleep.
Once again Malice Mizer hit a low, being without a drummer or a vocalist. With the down time, Mana opened up his own clothing line and boutiqe, Moi-meme-Moitie. Yet another year later, Malice Mizer was back on track with a support vocalist, Klaha, and a support drummer. The drummer was never credited and never became official in respect for Kami, who was credited as "eternal blood relative". Klaha, however, did become the official vocalist a year later. The band held up until December 2001, when they decided on an indeffinate hiatus for unknown reasons.
On March 19, 2002, Mana was once again in the music scene. He came back with a new appearance and solo project, Moi Dix Mois. In Moi dix Mois, Mana is most definately not the innocent little doll you once knew in Malice Mizer. In this project, Mana composes, writes, and directs all of his own music. The apperance of Moi dix Mois gives of a strong "death metal" yet elegant and mysterious feeling to it, much like the music itself. Mana shows off a more powerful side to himself with powerful guitar cords and the very own image of how he sees the band should be. Moi dix Mois is much like a world within itself, which is very difficult to describe in words. To fully experience Moi dix Mois, you can't just read about it. You need to hear and see the music and concerts to even begin to understand the vision Mana is portraying.
Mana is very passionate about his music. He likes many things, but music will always be number one for him. There is still a real human being under all that, but music is such a huge passion to him that he would probably die a slow painful death if it was taken away from him.
In the days of Malice Mizer, Mana completely shrowded his life in mystery. In interviews, Mana would never talk (and still doesn't) but would tell band members what he said, and most would be silly answers. You could never really tell when Mana was serious. But now with Moi dix Mois, Mana seems to have grown up a little. He now shares his interests and hobbies with his fans, and out of this we have found he is very interested in food and cooking. One of Mana's favourite foods is curry. He talked about curry so much, you'd think he had dreams every night about it. However, now that he's toured Europe, his favourite foods have been greatly expanded.
Now a bit about Mana's interests.
Video Games:
Mana adores video games. He buys game counsils as soon as they come out. He loves an array of different games, but his most favourite would be CastleVania, and he had an interview with the creator of the game. Supposedly Mana has an area in his room devoted to his games. He keeps all of them, and has many old ones "just incase" he ever wants to play them again, or maybe he just doesn't want to let them go.
Movies
Mana may not watch much TV, but he watches tons of movies. Rumor has it that he has a small movie library in his home. Mana especially enjoys horror films, one of his favourites being the original Dracula. His favourite type of horror would be Italian, and his least favourite is Japanese, because he gets scared of them. Mana also loves war movies. His favourite of that genre being Saving Private Ryan. As far as TV goes, Mana has said he enjoys anime and cooking shows. His favourites are Barbapapa and Doraemon, but he also likes Sailor Moon, Angelique, various shojo anime (moreso manga), and Gundam Wing.
Hobbies
Mana enjoys collecting many random things. He learned how to make garage kits from Dada (vo. of Velvet Eden) and over time has come to collect them. He also collects figurines from video games, horror films/comics, and sci fi films/comics. Mana's house is said to be very cluttered and messy do to all of the stuff he collects and stuff he never throws away. One of his absolute favourite hobbies is cooking. Mana has memorized the scents of over 35 different spices and loves to experiment with his cooking.
Interests
On top of what I've already said, Mana is a big fan of many different types of music. He likes heavy death and black metal music, French Pop (his favorite french artist is Mylene Farmer), classical music, and even the 80s. His favorite bands are Motley Crue and Slayer. He loves exploring new cultures, as well. Mana has been to France and Germany a number of times, and is now looking into America.
Instruments
Mana can play many instruments besides guitar. He can also play trumpet, synthesizer, and drums (but not as well as he'd like). At his house, he currently owns 10 guitars (soon 11), an accordian, a violin, a bass guitar, and a synthesizer. Incase you're wondering, for the most part, Mana designs his guitars and gets them custom made and for free from the ESP company in Japan.
Pets
The only pets Mana has ever owned are sea-monkeys. (He doesn't enjoy touchiong animals very much.) In his fanclub, Mana had a contest for one abroad fan and one domestic fan to receive sea-monkeys personally from him. Mana named his first "Sea Demon" (as he calls them) Damien.
Dislikes
Ok, so you know what Mana does like, but what does he not like? Well, he doesn't like small enclosed places. When Mana was younger he was locked in a room by himself and since then he's been clausterphobic. Mana also doesn't like loud obnoxious crowds (unless its a concert of course) or flownder because people eat them when they're still half alive. Mana definately does not like sports. He usually gets very bored when people talk about them. Along with that, he does not like very athletic people, especially girls. Mana also hates sickness and being around people that are sick.
Fans, Relationships, Family
Mana has never said he's married, nor has he ever said he's not married. In the opposite sex, Mana looks for girls that are a bit irregular. He doesn't want them to be very sporty or sickly. He likes girls that can be somewhat assertive, but mysterious and sweet, like a doll or a girl from a shojo manga. Mana has said that he doesn't look for relationships, and he's not one to make the first move. However, I don't think he'd appreciate hundreds of fan girls throwing themselves at him. Mana is one to take things as they come, whatever happens, happens.
Mana has few male fans in Japan, and gets very excited when he sees male fans in Europe. He's always wanted male fans, so it makes him ecstatic. I think he feels he can connect with them more, and he enjoys being around males.
Now family. It seems that both of Mana's parents are still married. Mana has a brother, a sister, and a neice (from his sister) named Mi-chan. Mana really loves Mi-chan and plays with her when he sees his family (he only visits them once a year), but his sister refuses to let him turn her daughter into anything like him.
