I am here for Friends

About Me

I am about to complete my seventh year here in the metroplex and I still call myself a NYer. I have met some great people here but I haven't yet felt the urge to put down permanent roots and call it home. I am starting off the year with a new job and a new locale, so I am hopeful to get back that spark I first felt when I moved here in '01. "Love is the secret to happiness" according the fortune cookie I just ate. Well, getting back to the things I love is definitely a good way to start the year. A year and a half ago I was diagnosed with type II diabetes. At this point I can say that I have the diabetes and my emotions under control. It sucks to have but I am back in control. I have a few goals that I set for myself when I first arrived in TX that I haven't accomplished and I am hoping that at the end of this year I can look back with a smile in that respect. For the friends that know what I am talking about, show a brotha' a little support. You know I always love the start of a new year. Start things fresh. Oh if you play the lotto, the numbers on the back of my fortune are 8 13 26 38 43 24. If you hit so me some love will ya?

My Interests

Lately I have spent to much time hanging with the boys at various bars. Kinda forgot about all the other stuff I like to do. WTF. Well back to basics. Going to see a bunch of shows (music) this year. Read a ton of books. Go places I have never been. See every museum and art exhibit that interests me. Meet new people every day. Ride my bike. Hike till I'm lost. Find out what really makes Dallas cool (if there is such a thing). I am down for anything this year.

I'd like to meet:

Still Like to meet everyone but I would like to meet more people sharing my likes and beliefs. Symphony anyone? Shakespeare in the park sound like fun? Porgy and Bess on a friday night? I miss the culture, its here even though it can be hard to find. Anybody for a camping trip to the Grand Canyon? Maybe a trip to Europe for a music festival. Haven't seen the ruins of Machu Picchu yet.

Music:

I still enjoy staying out of the mainstream. I will listen to most anything (including country) but I will usually only spend my money on music that doesn't get popular play. I listen to 88.1 (jazz) and 89.3 KON (they have a great monday night lineup with Zydaco and Reggae back to back), the rest of the time I am listening to my ipod tracks. The last few shows I have been to was Lupe Fiasco and Robert Randolph and the Family Band at HOB and Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals at the Majestic. I used to go to nearly a 100 shows a year now I am lucky to make 5. Thats done. I might now make 100 but I am going to make a run at it. The last few tunes I have purchased were Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings (if you like Amy Winehouse), O.C. (if you like old school east coust hip hop), Radiohead and Dizzy Rascal(?). Made to my first New Orleans Jazz Festival (thanks Andrea)and I plan on making it to this years too. The Neville Brothers are back, Stevie Wonder, Billy Joel, Diana Krall, Steel Pulse, The Roots, Kenny Wayne Shepard, Santana, Galactic, Derek Trucks Band, and Keb Mo' just to name a few of the acts. Can't miss this one, please! I like it all but if its different, innovative, my interest is peaked.

Movies:

Alright I have a few movie buddies and I have been seeing a bunch of movies lately. Still hit the indies at the Angelica. No Country for Old Men was bad ass. Think There Will be Blood should be awesome too. Daniel Day Lewis is sick.

Television:

TV has gotten a little carried away with the reality shows. I usually only watch Heroes, sporting events and a bunch of stuff on PBS.

Books:

The last few; The Kite Runner (Khaled Hosseini), The 6th Target (James Patterson), The Central Liberal Truth (Lawrence Harrison). The next few; The Content of Our Character (Shelby Steel), The Door of no Return (William St Clair), and probably another James Patterson novel or two.

Heroes:

Besides my staples (you know who you are), I need some new heroes. I will get back to you.

My Blog

resistance is futile

You know I have been trying my best to tone down the late nite excursions, but the peer pressure always gets the best of me.  I hope that everyone was able to enjoy the unbelieveable night in the...
