The Space Giants

About Me

"From the far reaches of outer space comes a threat to planet Earth." Originally titled Ambassador Magma (Maguma Taishi), The Space Giants was the American dubbed version of the the Tokusatsu Japanese superhero television show which aired originally from July 4, 1966 to September 25, 1967. In 1972 The Space Giants was distributed throughout the world and dubbed into several languages including Spanish and English. Atlanta's WTBS Super Station along with numerous UHF televison stations across the United States began airing the The Space Giants in 1978 followed by other Japanese programs such as Ultraman and Spectreman. The show centered around a boy Miko, the evil villain Rodak and the heroic family of robots named Goldar, Silvar and Gam. Goldar the father along with his wife Silvar and their son Gam who was created in the image of Miko were robots that transformed into rocket ships and could fly to the rescue of endangered humans. Miko was saved from one of Rodak's many terrible monsters by the main hero Goldar and taken to his hidden lair in the center of Mount Olympia. There he was introduced to Methusan — the ancient wise man who created the robotic Space Giants. Miko was given a rocket-shaped whistle that when blown summoned the robots to come and save him from attacks by Rodak and his minions of Lugo men and space monsters. Rodak was an evil dictator from outer space who employed an army of ninja-like soldiers known as Lugo men. When beaten, the Lugo men dissolved into a green slime before perishing. The evil Rodak hovered over Earth in his bat-shaped spaceship often summoning giant Godzilla-like beasts to attack and destroy the cities of Earth. The Space Giants was the first of many Japanese live action superhero television programs filmed in color that opened the door for many more television shows to follow. Other fantastic Japanese shows that follwed the lead of The Space Giants included Ultraman, Spectreman and Johnny Sokko and his flying robot. The Space Giants were clearly an influence on American children's programs years later including the Tranformers and Might Morphin Power Rangers. The Space Giants are available through several video dealers around the world.
