ASPIRING AUTHOR.As I enter an upscale restaurant in Washington, D.C., I found myself several feet away from Darnell; I took a moment to observe his existence as he sit starring out the window interconnecting with every passerby. His look is picture-perfect – I thought that perhaps he just completed a photo shoot – styling a white suit and hat, with black & white checkered shoes. I joined Darnell at the table and began my interview by asking him a question, “What is your philosophy for life?” His answer is powerfully truthful and to the point. “My philosophy is about living my best life. Everyday I remind myself not to accept less than my best, as well as the fact, I believe I have the power for greatness. I believe that power is not based solely on money, material possessions, and knowledge - my knowledge does not equate to power, but how I use my knowledge does. One way that I’ve used my knowledge is by establishing boundaries in my life that no one will be able to take away."Darnell grew up impoverished, raised by his mother in the projects outside of Washington, D.C., on welfare and in a world of struggle. This world of struggle created a childhood of confusions with a vision of limited possibilities. “I remember many afternoons my mother and I would go to Human Services to receive food; many nights my mother would go to bed on a empty stomach, because there was only enough food in the house to feed my brother and I; many nights without sleeping, because of the noise from the gang members outside; many days without electricity; and many days of struggle. My mother struggled with her own childhood-negative experiences, however, she always managed to do her best with raising my brother and I.” Despite his mother's positive influence and survival skills that she instilled. At the age of 14, Darnell became increasingly displeased. With so much on his mind and a part-time job to help support the family, Darnell was unable to focus on his education, and received titles from educators regarding a learning disability. The negative titles Darnell says he accepted damaged his self esteem to such an extent that it will take several years for him to overcome. “Within my teen-age years, I was in a state of confusion. I began associating with troubled peers who demonstrated a high level of hatred towards life, as well as, other human beings. I believed others knew more about me than what I knew about myself; I had few positive role models and no farther figure in my life; I believe that had a lot to do with my experiences, and the decisions I made.”By the tender age of 20 – Darnell was ready to proclaim determination, he setout on a mission of becoming a different example of what a man is. He began reading books, communicating with motivational speakers, and studying the negative experiences of others. The self-studies and his determination proved successful. Darnell began to think differently, changing his language, and listening attentively. By February of 1994, destiny intervened by an encounter with a scout from Casablanca’s modeling agency based in New York. Before long, Darnell had joined the agency and soon propelled as a male fashion model. Modeling was not to be the final frontier for Darnell. In 1996 Darnell started working for Human Services, community centers, and Project Discovery where he lectured teenagers and young adults on how to change their lives by realizing and living their dreams. His lectures empowered - allowing people the opportunity to view themselves as a work of art designed for greatness.Determined to continue reinventing his life. In January of 2000, Darnell founded “Reflections Within Worldwide” an non-profit web-site based company that was ignited as a result of Darnell’s personal experiences, beliefs, as well as an intense desire to provide information, products, and services on Love, Life and Relationships. Reflections Within Worldwide (www.ReflectionsWithinWorldwide.com) is scheduled to re-launch late 2008.Throughout the next couple of years, Darnell would devote hard work toward his poetic creativity. This hard work presented itself on September 30, 2003 when Darnell’s poem “Rage” was awarded the Prestigious Editor’s Choice Award for outstanding achievement in poetry by the International Library of Poetry. Darnell’s poem “Rage” continued to receive great reviews. In the fall of 2003, “Rage” was published in “Eternal Portraits,” a hardbound collection of over 200 poems that displays an artistic vision.On January 25, 2010, Darnell is scheduled to release his first collection of inspiring and provocative poems, along with unforgettable short stories, and risky illustrations. “The Mirror Within” explores the understanding of authentic love; the unforgettable experiences of sex; the fading of passion; the risks of trust; the power of forgiveness; and the acceptance and understanding of self. “When I first began working on what would eventually become The Mirror Within.” He says. “My guiding principle was my determination to create poetry that would have a positive impact; poetry that would deliver a social conscience. While writing this book, I focused on my intentions and my dreams, not my critics. Darnell continues. “This focus delivered a positive impact to my soul, and I felt deep-down joy. I define joy as an internal peace-a connection to love. This internal peace allowed my work to be created from places I’ve been, things I’ve felt, and people I’ve touched. Therefore, it’s clear that my written words are written only against hearts, to explore the fire burning within us. Most times the rhythm of the poems hit me like lighting and the words become a work of art designed to empower - I call this authentic revelation – a impact at its highest level of understanding.”"As we continue throughout our life journey, I believe we create different characters that live within us, all in which create their very own reflection of truth.
