Everyone has a day job and aside from helping you set yourself apartfrom the crowd, currently I am trying to re-define diecast cars. With 8 years in the biz and a passion for all things wheeled, I set out to change the game with JL Full Throttle . The JL Full Throttle line has taken over a year to develop. As JLFT's Director of Design I have been intimatley involved every aspect of the product.
With JL Full Throttle I got a chance to work with Chip Foose , I have always followed his work and it is one of the things that inspired me to become a designer. He continues to inspire me today. My favorite part of working with Chip has been the various discussions about Design in general, Car Design, Hot Rods the future of Hot Rodding, Materials and all kinds of other things where we can pick each other's brains. It's made me a better designer and leader.
The JL Full Throttle line has been smokin' at retail. The Foose stuff is really kicking ass. I am very excited about the new models that are coming up especially the '56 Ford Truck. This has to be the hands down fan favorite episode of Overhaulin' and our diecast is just as stunning. Keep your eyes peeled for it and others at your local retailer.
Check out this video from SEMA of JL Full Throttle unveiling Chip's Dream Machine.
Before JL Full Throttle I worked For Jada Toys for a year. What and experience! it was dramatically different then my time at Mattel. "Keeping it Real" is truly a way of life at Jada.
While there, I started and headed up their, at the time, "new", Toy Department. I worked with some creative folks to create a line known as Chub City. It was Dub City for kids. The Cars and Characters looked great and it's cool to see where the team at Jada is taking the line. I also dabbled into the collector vehicle biz as well lending my talents to a number of cars and a few of their show cars.
My first stop on the West Coast was Hot Wheels. From 1998-2004, I cranked out designs and oversaw whole product lines along with becoming something of a trend guru. The Trend part was something of an accident. At the time I just wanted to design sick cars and trucks. But managment saw fit for me to work on "Trend" or "Tween" product. I dove in and eventually developed my first true hit, HOT TUNERZ.
Now I'm not saying I was the first or only guy out there doing "cartoon" or "charicature" cars. Ed "Big Daddy" Roth, Dave Deal, Larry Wood, and many others inspired me as a kid and still do today. But taking my passion for modern hot rods, Tunerz and DUB style trucks & SUV's, and combining them with my love of animation and cartoons was natural for me. It worked, and we sold millions!
I also designed a ton of 1/64th scale basic cars, many of which are still in production today! The featured car on the packaging from 2001-2003 was even one of my cars! That was cool! Some of the models I designed are:
Muscle Tone, my idea of the 5th gen Camaro. It was a 2000 First Edition which means it took GM 5-6 YEARS to get to something similar. Sho-Stopper, The first Tuner in the HW line. It became Seared Tuner which was and is an awful name. MS-T Suzuka Super Tuned Ford Focus Dragster, This project gave me a good friend in Shaun Carlson, Good Luck in the SRT Pro-Stocker... Mc Donald's Happy Meal Hauler wagon, A McD's Happy meal toy that was a pretty cool design and one of the better Happy Meal Hot Wheels. Switchback, a personal favorite Tantrum Moto-Crossed 40 Somethin' 65 Buick Riviera, yep I can do classic and hot-rod style too! Marco, Saw your's at SEMA and it was killer. Rockster, What I drive now is almost the same thing! Tooned Escalade Tooned Eclipse Tooned S-10 Tooned Toyota Supra Tooned Ferrari 360 Modena Torque Screw and others! In between all of that I found time to work with: Mopar, Wings West, Ford, Vitek, NuFormz, Chevy, KMC, Lowrider Edge, CollectionBuilder.com, Stitchcraft, SEMA, Modern Image, and more on some fun real vehicle projects. One of the more recent ones was the 2006 Drift Charger for Mopar and NuFormz. Mopar and Samuel Hubinette debuted it at SEMA in 2005. Sam and the Nuformz crew took home the 2006 Formula D championship in it!Check out MyPics for just a sample of the automotive illustrations I have completed recently.
