Louis Hall & Friends:Louis brought the threesome together in 2006, after returning from a nine-month architectural placement in New York, with the aim of bringing some substance to his new catalogue of songs. Working hundred hour weeks might have discouraged most un-paid interns from pursuing a musical career on the side, but with the discovery that New York actually has an acoustic singer/songwriter scene, Louis hyper Hall threw himself into this double life with scary verve. Playing the solo acoustic scene taught him a great deal about guitar, singing, and song writing technique, and that if youre an Englishman in New York, you can get away with pretty much anything. Described by one critic as using wry humour and lyrical deviousness to his effect, Louis prefers to think that hes just being honest.A classically trained virtuoso (studying music and playing cello in just about every orchestra Edinburgh University has to offer), Helen Edwards has found it rather testing putting up with Louis lack of musical knowledge and strange alternative tunings, but they overcame this together through their love for pure, unadulterated melody, and many hours spent in the pub. Helen effortlessly weaves her way through the music with her uncanny ability to hit just the right note, binding the trio together, and proving to be a fundamental melodic force. Who needs a bass player anyway?Yes, he's still knocking around...one must not forget that Andy Paine on the drums instigated a memorable funk-rock group with Louis back in 2002. Split up by their year in practice, and missing Louis horribly, Andy had to resort to playing jazz in the smoky cellars of London and Edinburgh. Re-united, the two have picked up where they left off, with the infinitely-versatile Paine once again providing the funky backbeats to Louis new musical stylings. Can anyone stop this man?The unlikely trio like to think that they are doing something different fusing folk, jazz, funk, and classical influences they arent sure exactly what it is, but they like it all the same.
