The 411: The Nebraska Cornhuskers are the Division 1-A Team of the '90's..

About Me

The Chant...................................... Dear Lord in the battles as we go through life; We ask for a field that's fair. As chance that's equal to all in the strife; The courage to do it or dare. If we should win, let it be by the code; With our faith and honor held high. If we should lose, let us stand by the rules; And cheer as the winners go by. Day by day we get better and better; A team that can't be beat, won't be beat.

ImageIgloo.com The Latest - Current Husker Coaching Staff.........Bill Callahan, Head Coach.... Callahan arrives from the Oakland Raiders, whom he led to Super Bowl XXXVIII. Bill is known as a top offensive mind, an excellent offensive line coach and a good recruiter. He has 15 years of college experience, the bulk of which was at Illinois and Wisconsin. Immediately after being hired Coach Callahan announced that Nebraska would be changing to a West-Coast offense featuring a much more balanced attack.BIO OF CALLAHANJay Norvell,... Offensive Coordinator/Quarterbacks Coach. It took a little while, and some stroking of Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis's ego, but Jay was finally able to accept the offensive coordinator position at Nebraska. He spent the last two years as a tight ends coach on Callahan's staff with the Oakland Raiders. This represents Jay's return to the Big XII, as he spent the 1995 through 1997 seasons on Dan McCarney?s staff at Iowa State. Previously he worked with Callahan at Wisconsin under former Husker Barry Alvarez. BIO OF NORVELLDennis Wagner, Offensive Line.... Dennis arrives from Fresno State where he was the assistant head coach and offensive line coach for seven years. He was head coach at Wayne (NE) State for seven years, where he directed one of the division's most powerful offenses. BIO OF WAGNERRandy Jordan, Running Backs Coach.... Randy is closely tied to Bill Callahan, having recently completed a 12 year NFL career at Oakland in 2002. During the 2003 season he served on Callahan's coaching staff. Randy played his collegiate ball for Mack Brown at North Carolina, but we won't hold that against him. BIO OF JORDANTed Gilmore, Receivers Coach.... Ted was the receivers coach at the University of Colorado. Before that, he coached at Purdue with tight ends coach Scott Downing. He played his collegiate ball at Wyoming.BIO OF GILMOREShawn Watson, Tight Ends.... Shawn Watson replaces Scott Downing, who left to become the head coach at Northern Colorado. Shawn was on the staff at Colorado for seven years under Gary Barnett, serving as the Offensive Coordinator for six of those years. His tight ends were highly successful at Colorado, so hopefully he will bring a new level of performance to that position here. BIO OF WATSONKevin Cosgrove, Defensive Coordinator.... Replacing Bo Pelini as defensive coordinator is Kevin Cosgrove, who served as coordinator for Barry Alvarez at Wisconsin for the last nine years. He is known as an excellent recruiter as well. Plus he graduated from legendary Mt. Carmel High School in Chicago. BIO OF "COS"John Blake, Defensive Line.... Blake played for Coach Barry Switzer from 1979 to 1982, he was an assistant coach at OU under Barry Switzer and Gary Gibbs, and he served as head coach of the Sooners from 1996 to 1998. He has a reputation as being a good line coach and recruiter, and it should be noted that Bob Stoops won the 2000 national championship at Oklahoma almost entirely with Blake's athletes. BIO OF BLAKEBill Busch, Linebackers.... Busch arrives having spent the last three seasons coaching defensive backs at the University of Utah. He has deep ties to Nebraska, having held a graduate assistant position here nad having been an assistant coach for former Husker Tony Samuel at New Mexico State. He also has ties to Callahan and Cosgrove due to a graduate assistant position at Wisconsin in 1994. BIO OF BUSCHPhil Elmassian, Secondary Coach.... Phil arrives from Purdue, where he was defensive backs coach in 2003. He has 30 years of collegiate coaching experience. He has been defensive coordinator at four different schools.

ImageIgloo.com History of the Blackshirts.......... Release: 07/26/2006............... One of Huskers' most well-known traditions is of the Blackshirts, which has become the common nickname for Nebraska's defensive unit. The term originally dates back to the early 1960s and refers to the black practice jerseys that Nebraska's first-string defenders wear in practice. With the return of the two-platoon system in college football in 1964, the Huskers were preparing for a game at Minnesota, and Head Coach Bob Devaney was looking for a way to distinguish the different defensive units on the practice fields. Devaney dispatched assistant coach Mike Corgan to a local sporting goods store to find some "contrast jerseys," a sleeveless pullover that went on top of the players' practice jerseys. While the top offensive unit practiced in red jerseys and the second-string offense worked in green pullovers, the first string defense wore black pullovers and the second string wore the contrasting gold jerseys. Long-time sports information director Don Bryant credits much of Blackshirt mystique to defensive line coach George Kelly, who served on Devaney's staff until 1968. Kelly was often heard yelling and exhorting the Blackshirts during practices and scrimmages. Eventually, the rest of the coaches began calling the top defensive units by the same name. While the 1964 defense was the first to wear the black practice jerseys, the name was slow to catch on. It took several years before the state's newspapers started referring to the Husker defense as the Blackshirts, while the first mention of the Blackshirts in the Nebraska football media guide did not occur until 1969. The term began to catch on during Monte Kiffin's tenure as defensive coordinator in the mid-1970s, before the Blackshirts earned national acclaim under Charlie McBride, who served as the Huskers' defensive coordinator from 1982 to 1999. NU ranked among the nation's top 10 in all four major defensive categories (rush defense, pass defense, total defense and scoring defense) on four occasions, helping Nebraska to national titles in 1994, 1995 and 1997.Members of the top defensive unit receive their Blackshirts the week of the season opener. Until recent years, the jersey was left hanging in a player's locker before the start of the week's practice. The jerseys are now distributed to the Blackshirts in a team ceremony and are presented to all first-unit players, including starters in different defensive sets. Before bowl games, all senior defensive players are awarded honorary Blackshirts at the bowl site to wear during game preparations. Awards.................... Nebraska players have combined to win three Heisman Trophies, one Maxwell Award, three Walter Camp Awards, eight Outland Trophies, four Lombardi Awards, one Butkus Award, one Davey O'Brien Award, one Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award and one Rimington Trophy.
