The Green Pajamas formed in the spring of 1984 when Jeff Kelly and Joe Ross joined forces to record and release their first album "Summer Of Lust", pioneering Seattle's answer to the Los Angeles Paisley Underground scene. The band rose to college radio fame in the mid 1980s with the 7" Kim The Waitress, and over the last 25 years has released numerous albums on various labels including Green Monkey, Bomp!, Camera Obscura, Get Hip, Rubric and currently Hidden Agenda. Eschewing gigging for recording, the Pajamas only make a few live appearances each year.

NEW!
For the first time, you can now purchase Jeff Kelly's jazzy, The Rosary and The House of Jade on-line! Long only available in the CD box set "Melancholy Sun," the album was recorded side by side with the Pajamas' 1997 release "Strung Behind The Sun." It's a mostly-tongue-in-cheek-cold-war-love-story concept album, of which Richie Unterberger said: "... in fact most of the record is the sort of beguiling, cultish pop-folk-rock that Kelly's fans have come to know and love..."

"Some 'cult' bands are described as such simply because they're not very popular; the Green Pajamas, on the other hand, truly merit the label. Quietly churning out psychedelic pop gems for a small but fervent international following since 1984, the Green Pajamas release their music sporadically and rarely perform live. Those unfamiliar with the band should take the opportunity to see them, but be warned: You may leave a cult member." -Seattle Weekly

Influences: When we conceived the band in the early 80s, we were mostly inspired by our love for psychedelic pop records of the 60's (particulary The Beatles' song Rain and the Stones' Satanic Majesties Request LP) as well as the the Paisley Underground scene that was happening at the time (The Rain Parade, The Three O'clock) but as the years wore on we allowed ourselves to explore Leonard Cohen's territory a bit more and more.
The obvious influences: The Beatles, The Byrds, Leonard Cohen, Donovan, Bob Dylan, Nick Drake, Kinks, Rain Parade, Three O'Clock, Velvet Underground, Yardbirds, Neil Young, Zombies.

The less obvious (or at least less-apparent) influences: David Bowie, Kate Bush, Nick Cave, Brian Eno, Jimi Hendrix, Rolling Stones, Serge Gainsbourg, Souixie and the Banshees, Violent Femmes among many others.

More artists we love: Air, Apples In Stereo, The Band, Syd Barrett, Beck, Bevis Frond, Big Star, Marc Bolan, Eric Burdon and the Animals, Johnny Cash, Capping Day, Elvis Costello, Crazy Horse, Curve, Miles Davis, Dead Can Dance, Dead Moon, Dipsomaniacs, Dream Syndicate, Duke Ellington, Jack Endino, Dukes Of Stratosphere, The Faces, Flaming Groovies, Flying Burrito Brothers, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Garbage, Girl Trouble, Green River, Lee Hazlewood, The Hollies, The Jam, Jefferson Airplane, Joy Division, King Crimson, Kraftwerk, John Lennon, Love, Lucky Bishops, Dean Martin, Mazzy Star, Kirsty MacColl, Monkees, Mott The Hoople, The Move, Mudhoney, Os Mutantes, Neutral Milk Hotel, Nico, Nilsson, Nirvana, Olivia Tremor Control, Buck Owens, Gram Parsons, Paul Revere & The Raiders, Pearls Before Swine, David Peel, The Pogues, Iggy Pop & Stooges, Posies, Pretty Things, Lou Reed, Keith Richards, Frank Sinatra, Kendra Smith, Jesse Sykes, Randy Newman, Thunderclap Newman, Gary Numan, Tanakh, T Rex, Tom Waits, Hank Williams, The Who, Wings, White Stripes, XTC, Frank Zappa, Warren Zevon
Sounds Like: "The Pajamas somehow manage to sound like holding two kaleidoscopes side by side and using them as binoculars to see the future of rock'n'roll." wrote Phil McMullen in Bucketfull Of Brains, UK [July 1987]
