ELECTRIC MAYHEM
Electric Mayhem is a jazz fusion quartet based out of Tuscaloosa, Alabama. With the scintillating sounds of electric bass and guitar, saxophone, and drums, this quartet has not only brought people multitudes of enjoyment, but myriads of new listeners to the wonderful genre of jazz. When you hear this band, you can count on hearing many fusion classics from Chick Corea, Pat Metheny, Herbie Hancock, and many others as well as some original compositions by seasoned composer / saxophonist Nathan Holaway. The playing radius for this band currently consists of Tuscaloosa, Huntsville, and Birmingham, Alabama but is constantly growing with more and more opportunities for this wonderful outfit.
Nathan Holaway, a native of Decatur, Alabama is a graduate from the University of Alabama with his Masters degree in jazz arranging. Having formerly been the Jazz Graduate Teaching Assistant at UA, Holaway is not only a consummate musician; he is also a serious composer as well, having over 100 original compositions under his pen. When not performing or composing, he writes frequently for All About Jazz (www.allaboutjazz.com), Jazz Review (www.jazzreview.com), and Tuscaloosas own Planet Weekly magazine (www.theplanetweekly.com). Holaway also has hosted his own jazz specialty radio show (Hear Me Talkin to Ya?) on Tuscaloosas New Rock college station. Somehow, he still finds time to write published jazz poetry on the side, as well as give private lessons and practice his clarinet, flute, piano, and trumpet.
Thomas Furlough is the bassist for Electric Mayhem and is currently the string educator at Westlawn Middle School. Furlough is a graduate of the University of Alabama School of Music receiving his Masters in Jazz Arranging and has played with various groups in the Montgomery, Tuscaloosa, and Birmingham areas. Besides playing with Electric Mayhem, you can hear Furlough in action on several occasions with Tom Wolfe or Shane Porter. When not teaching or playing, Furlough is not only an insatiable arranger, he is an active Alabama National Guardsman.
Kevin Leon is the new drummer for Electric Mayhem, and is currently an active musician in the Birmingham and Tuscaloosa area. Leon, is a Birmingham native and has made quite a niche for himself in his few years actively playing. A master of styles, Leon can execute any kind of music with mastery and brilliance. Whether it is hard bop, fusion, latin, rock, blues, or reggae, Kevin Leon is in total control of his drums.
John Holaway, another Decatur native, is a graduate of the University of Alabama with his Bachelors degree in art. He currently works for Randall Reilly Publishing, and he is a freelance jazz guitarist in the Tuscaloosa area. He is the electric guitarist for Electric Mayhem. Bringing in over a decade of guitar experience and electricity to the group, he is as versatile as they come. Growing up, Holaway quickly picked up a natural ability for guitar playing locally around the Decatur area. Bringing excitement and raw power to the group, his blues-drenched guitar makes others seem second rate at best.
