The Early Years...
Twenty-three year old singer and songwriter Mariannie is an intuitive musician when it comes to the complexities of writing words on paper and singing them in versatilities that can become technical. In one side of her family lies her shared characteristics of practicalities, details and analysis; while on the other dwells the coherent understanding of the free-spirit. Her pre-eminence as a musician are united by both personas; like thunder needs lightning. Her suite of songs incites the audience to the complexities of her ability to negate the technicalities of being a young musician, without the dexterity of neglecting the density of life matters. In other words, Mariannie will tell you that the universal value of a good song is its simplicity, but the melody requires the message to possess depth. She writes with her soul and sings with her heart. It is typical to hear her belt out a number that requires these aspects, in agreement with essence of soul and beat, accompanied by emotions that translate from the very depths of her core.
Born in the Philippines, Mariannie’s mother began using cassette tapes to record her daughters as a frugal alternative of communicating with their grandmother in Chicago. While recording one day, her mother noticed Mariannie’s ability of mimicking artists, inevitably encouraging her talent by showcasing her voice in church. Her first song in a performance, at the age of four, was “How Great Thou Art.â€, a gospel song which Mariannie attributes her lyric writing, and melodic vocal structures to the particular genre. By 1993, her family’s transition to Canada allowed Mariannie to be involved in theatre and musical functions, while her grandmother, who was a classically trained vocalist, developed her skills methodically. Often invited in community functions, and being referred to as the girl with a ‘big voice’, she seized every opportunity to participate in competitions, winning various awards.
The trail of her evanescent musical childhood did not entirely depart from her writing in the present because of the individuality present in her compositions today. “I’m young, and I have my fun, but I’ve been through things in life you couldn’t imagine. That’s the reason why I sing. It is the only way to settle my emotions. No matter what they are. It’s a little bit secular, a little bit soul.â€
Music is what feelings sound like...
The journey is of lyrical value; distinctive of Mariannie’s vocal formation dancing within its wide range unfurls her exceptional ability to incorporate rhythm and blues, along with the eloquent styling of classical vocals. She treads at ease on high keys, that she can go Minnie Ripperton on you. Today is definitely a brand new day. While currently collaborating with local underground artists, and producers, she is also producing her own music; arranging her compositions as well as creating the music with her vocals. A multi-faceted wonder, Mariannie is a powerhouse in her own right. Regularly performing in Port Dalhousie’s Port Mansion, and Brock University’s Isaac’s; she can make you drop your conversations and listen in awe. Make way for the lady.
