Canada's Shame

I am here for Friends and Networking

About Me

I like to consider myself a fairly well-educated and "proud" Canadian, so when it was brought to my attention that there's a whole other side to the history of this country that I wasn't aware of, it stirred up a lot of resentment and anger. I'm not here to preach to anyone...merely to educate! The way I wished I had been educated years ago. The subject of Native Residential Schools has been kept a "dirty little secret" for far too long. I admit that I've been out of high school for many years, and am not familiar with the current curriculum taught today...but I know that I've never been told about this side of Canada's past, and I sincerely hope that things are changing today.
I know this isn't much, and hopefully someday I'll be able to do more to enlighten people about the truth of how our Indigenous people have been treated unfairly by our government...looked upon as "savages" who needed to be eliminated. But for now, this is the best I can do.Layout made by

My Interests

I'd like to meet:

I would love to sit and talk to some survivors of Residential Schools and their families, to get a first-hand account of what really went on. Reading about it in books is helpful, but hearing it told from someone who lived it would bring a realism to it that books can't provide.

Books:

"Behind Closed Doors:A Survivor's Story Of The Boarding School Syndrome" by Mary Fortier
"Finding My Talk:How Fourteen Native Women Reclaimed Their Lives After Residential School" by Agnes Grant
"A National Crime:The Canadian Government and the Residential School System, 1879 to 1986" by John S. Milloy
"Residential Schools:The Stolen Years" edited by Linda Jaine

Let me share my concerns with you.

I had a few misgivings about going forward with my plan of opening a myspace profile about the Residential Schools.  Mainly because I'm a non-Aboriginal person and I was worried that people would...
