Jess Atkinson has just released his debut solo album, ‘The Waterline’. The 11 track album is full of his well crafted songs reflecting influences from Ryan Adams, Neil Finn and alt country to the slick and not so slickly produced 80s, to stalwarts like Fleetwood Mac and Paul Kelly.
Various songs on the album feature performances from Adelaide musicians including Sean Kemp (drums), Tom Soteriou (bass), Matthew Fraser (Keys) and a beautiful duet with Adelaide songstress Emily Davis on the title track ‘the waterline’.
In the past Jess Atkinson has spent time as lead singer/songwriter of Adelaide and Melbourne bands the pod, the project and White Montana in which he supported artists such as Powderfinger, Regurgitator, and Something For Kate. Sometimes ashamedly (but mainly unashamedly) he’s spent time fronting glam rock and 80s cover bands on the side. He’s previously released several EPs and an album with his former outfits and has had various tracks used for films, television, websites and DVD’s.
This new album, encouraged by financial backing from an Arts SA grant is another step up from his debut solo EP ‘The Longitude and the Latitude’ and is an excellent testament to Atkinson’s song writing ability.
