At the age of 26, John Sparrow (DJ Khemlab) has thus far had a career accented with achievements that include his first residency after only two years of DJing in 2003 at the former club night "Havinit-Large" @ Zen Lounge Nightclub, and in 2007 a residency at the very popular "Ritual Fridays". Notably in 2006 he opened for Judge Jules live at the Empire Cabaret and for DJ Dan in May 2007 at the popular Pharaoh’s Nightclub, in addition playing alongside Ronski Speed, BK and Marco V. In 2007 he also headlined Red Heartz and Get Down with Crown in Thunder Bay, Ontario, two parties integral to creating the electronic scene in North-western Ontario. For 2007 Khemlab has set his sights on expanding his reach around North America, and continuing to produce tracks under the name Norman J.
Versatile in his programming, solid in his mixing and known for bringing people to their feet with his energy filled performances, Khemlab has established himself as one of Winnipeg's best and most respected DJs.
Born and raised in Winnipeg, Canada, Khemlab was exposed to music at a very early age. You could say music runs in his blood, with relatives who were percussionists, pianists, professional violinists with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, and trained opera singers. Khemlab’s early musical performances were on the trumpet, and then later in various bands playing guitar, drums and bass. Soon after attending his first electronic event, Khemlab was bitten by the DJ bug and knew that would be his future path. He began by mixing MP3s on his PC, soon after which he bought his first set of turntables upon which he quickly grasped the skills of live DJing. Khemlab now performs regularly at events in Winnipeg, as well as on regular internet radio shows for the former Blizzard Radio based in Winnipeg, and more recently puredj.com based in Holland.
Khemlab’s reach extends beyond the stage as well; in 2003 he became a founding member of Crown Productions along with friends DJ Dizz and Dubbz, helping to re-rejuvenate the then-ailing Winnipeg electronic music scene. Crown have become one of the most well-respected promotion companies in Winnipeg, throwing such events as the legendary Evil Dead, Where the Wild Things Are, and Winnipeg’s most successful New Years’ Eve event, Back to the Future which will celebrate its’ fifth anniversary in 2007.
You can catch Khemlab hosting his radio show on Puredj.com called "METRO". Check www.PureDJ.com for details!
