Ian Watson, a native of Kingston, Jamaica, is a multi-talented musician and artist based in Ocho Rios, Jamaica. His stage name, ONAWI means 'cannot be lost' in the language of the Bini people of Southern Nigeria (the region formerly known as Biafra). He was signed exclusively to Bob Marleys Tuff Gong label and completed a 10 song album for the label, releasing two singles that received radio airplay.Onawi has toured in Europe, South America, Canada and the United States with prominent reggae acts Culture and Sugar Minott. He was the bass player on Cultures 1989 CD 'Good Things' produced by Ras Records. Onawi has played with several bands around the Central Florida area including Deja, a '00 nominee for Orlando Weeklys Best Reggae Band (he did a carnival '99 tour with them in Feb. '99) and 'Rising Lion' a '05 nominee.He completed three years of under-graduate study majoring in Art Education at the Edna Manley School of Visual and Performing Arts, received the AA degree in Fine Art at Valencia Community College (May 04).
Onawi hung his first solo exhibition at the African-Caribbean Institute of Jamaica in 1993, where he worked as Graphic Artist/Audio-Visual Librarian. His paintings elsewhere include two murals at the Hope Gardens Zoo in Kingston, Jamaica and private collections in Copenhagen, Denmark, Springe, Germany and Tel Aviv, Israel.
