About Me

After starting to make my own decissions I worked as a sailor, logistical manager and bartender I travelled a few years through mainly Southeast Asia and a little bit through Southamerica. During these years I found my passion for writing and telling stories. My first journalistic experience was as a reporter for the Phnom Penh Post in Cambodia and as a editor/reporter für the Myanmar Times in Burma. After studying journalism in Germany and India I started working as a freelancer, interrupted by a scholarship by the Guenter Dahl journalism school, also in Germany. Since then I worked in Afghanistan, Iraq, East Timor, Indonesia, Democratic Republic of Congo, England, Pakistan, Rwanda, Sudan, Switzerland, Tschad, Uganda. My work is my life and my purpose. That basically means that I spent a lot of time alone and have no home, nor a flat, nor a car, nor a TV. Instead a lot of excitement, respect for myself and great stories to tell. My few belongings, books, CDs, etc are stashed at freinds places. If iam at home I crash at my sisters, friends and sometimes a pretty girl who has sympathy with the homeless. I have bought a lot of tooth brushes in the last few yearsI am focussing on humanitarian stories in conflict and war zones, in the so called third world. Even though the European media is not necessarily interested in these reporting I stick to the words I heard so many times by refugees, IDPs, war victims, abused children or childsoldiers: For these people it does make a difference if somebody reports them, or not. They are able to raise their voice to remember not to forget about them.Within the hours of doubt I remember the words a dear friend and mentor told me once: Making money is easy. The difficult part is to make money with something you are willing to dedicate your life for.you can find more on my website: http://web.mac.com/carstenstormer

My Interests

Okay, lets pretend to be fifteen again. I like to travel, to read, to write, photography, litarature, politics ... and to go crazy in bars sometimes. I am getting bored of waking up next to a person you don't know, in a place you don't remember.

I'd like to meet:

Apart from Elvis and Angelina Jolie? ... the woman who takes me for what I am, not what she likes to see in me. People who impress me, well. I guess thats very generalising

Music:

Does someone actually read this? Well, I have no interest to be judged on my music taste

Movies:

This goes with the music section. However, I am a movie junkie - if there is time to watch.

Television:

No home no TV. If I had a home I would not have one either. Waste of time. I regrett every minute I spent in front of a TV zapping and watching crap. However, sometimes its good to have one around to watch football and documentaries.

Books:

I am addicted to books. I need an hour of reading every day, if possible more. The last few books I read: Silk, Novocento, With burning patience. The Lover. Freedom at Midnight, La sombra del viento, Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress, The quiet American, The heart of Darkness.

Heroes:

some of the people who made me who I am, some who influenced me. Some I met on the road. My mentors and everybody who was there for me when I was lost or needed help. Of course my friends.
