About Me

From distant home planet known as Better Than You.

My Interests

Music, books, politics, finding a way to not spend the next 30 years resigned to 40-hour/week office drudgery and reducing myself to descriptions of 100 words or less.

Music:

The Affair, Day For Night, Beach House, The Clean, Turbonegro, Call and Response, de Barge (!), Delta 5, Elliott Smith, Big Star, Blondie, The Dead Boys, Richard Hell and the Voidoids, My Bloody Valentine, Art Brut, Band of Horses, Sloan, Kasabian, Black Tambourine and a bunch of other stuff. I mean, even Britney Spears made one good song (Toxic, as if it wasn't obvious).

Movies:

Deathproof, Me and You and Everyone We Know (I would write this over and over, but that would get boring...still...I love this movie. Love. This. Movie.), A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints, Over the Edge, The Adventures of Sebastian Cole, Scorpio Rising, Sixteen Candles, Friday Night Lights, Rushmore, Royal Tenenbaums, Pee-Wee's Big Adventure (!), Last Tango in Paris, Heavy Metal Parking Lot, La Jetee, The Outsiders, Female Trouble, Zelig, City of God, The Bicycle Thief, Die Mommie Die!, Closer (with the exception of Natalie Portman, who narrowly avoided single handedly destroying this film the way she does every other movie she's in), Welcome to the Dollhouse, Say Anything, American Beauty, Repo Man, Pee-Wee's Big Adventure...um...these lists are so hard because there really are other great films, but they slip my mind when it counts...

Television:

Arrested Development, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Seinfeld, Mr. Show, The Simpsons, Saturday Night Live (now. Not during the incredibly overrated first five years), Antiques Roadshow (sorry), The Cosby Show (really. The reruns on Nickelodeon from the first three seasons remind you of how funny that show was. Ha.), Faking It (UK Version), The Office (UK, Ricky Gervais version), Chappelle's Show, Ab Fab, all of those PBS things where people pretend they're living in some long ago time period (Frontier House, 1900s House, etc.).

Books:

The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, The Girls' Guide to Hunting and Fishing, Middlesex, Barrel Fever, Me Talk Pretty One Day, Class, The Sun Also Rises, Great Expectations, White Teeth, Stiff, Catcher in the Rye (I know. But it really is a fucking great book).

Heroes:

Stephen Colbert for that stunt at the White House Press dinner. Kanye West for the post-Katrina anti-Bush rant. Stiv Bators for getting hit by a car and just getting up like nothing happened and being like, "Mortally wounded? What?" Angela Davis for proving Reagan was an idiot. Paul Kruger, for every fucking op/ed he's written for the Times lately. Naomi Klein, for proving how awful and nefarious conservatives really are. Anita Hill for telling the truth.
