Deep inside the instant culture and the swirl of fast food and entertainment, few are the creators that succeeded in making music that is as unhurried as that of The Kugiz. From their beginning in a seaside underground shelter onto the release of their debut album, The Kugiz were consistent in making music which is unique, deep and diverse.Founded in 2001 by Erez Kugler (guitars ,vox) Izhar Shkedi (bass, vox) and Liran Kalina (drums, percussion). In their early years they focused on jamming and forging their unique sound, a combination of progrock, psychedelic blues and afro-latin grooves, inspired by a wide variety of artists, from Syd Barret to Fela Kuti. However, interwoven with the complex creative structure, are the magical and touching melodies of Erez Kugler. In the summer of 2005 the members of the band decided it was time to record. Armed with the collaborative experience of four years of playing together, they recorded most of the tracks at their own ‘Triple K studios’, and then headed to ‘AC studios’ in Arnhem Holland, where their friends Alexander and Ingo Caly, and other fellow musicians contributed the remaining overdubs of old analog organs, piano, harmonium, cello, and more. The final result was a warm and rich sound.Very quickly the songs were played on Israeli radio in various stations, and gained warm reviews from critics in the Israeli music industry. Consequently the lads set out on a coast to coast tour, in the holy land of Zion. Their live shows present the mellowness of their debut album, backed with a more powerful biting live sound, with scope way beyond the 9 tracks of the album.
On their shows The Kugiz host a variety of musicians, playing trumpet, sax, flute, piano and more, enriching the original sounds. Besides being musicians, the band members are also active artists. Singer and bass player Izhar Shkedi is a painter and drummer Liran Kalina is a photographer. Both have been working through the years on joint and solo projects and exhibitions.Recently, The Kugiz opened their own culture club ‘The local saloon’, featuring a stage for live concerts, a studio for electronic music, a dark room for silk printing and an art gallery hosting young (and old) artists.
The Kugiz continue playing live and are continuously working on material for the next album ‘Miles Away’.
