Thescapegoat Aka Deaf Selector

About Me

I'm Thescapegoat. A DJ with the Bust the Box crew.
I play allsorts of quality music and some shit I love too.
You can catch me in the good good clubs and parties of Brighton.
I also do a series of mixtapes under the Deaf Selector Moniker. Check band members for my latest playlist. Hit me up if you want to get on the mailing list.
Below is a long boring history of my personal musical evolution. I'd get a cup of tea at least.
Love'n'Peas
As a kid i went from Ma and pops playing me Beatles, Cream, Folk and Bird noises to my first record buying expeience. I left with Kylie and my mate with Michal Jackson, Bad. I ended up nicking it a few days later to copy and getting bollocked for its smuttyness. (If she could see my record collection now!). Kylie would have to wait untill me hitting puberty to registar on my radar again. Jive bunny came and went and i found myself sitting on the back of the bus busting out the lyrics to ice ice baby. I'd also impose hammer time occassionally. There is a copy of dance 91 in my colection so the raver in me must have been concived. Then came a moment clear in my head like no other. Sitting on MArtyn (chuzzlewit) 's bed with about 3 or four in the room. He hands me Siamese Dream by the Smashing Pumpkins on a personal stero. That day i was aware there were people out there who are making some good shit and i better go find it. Unfortunalty basingstoke didn't hold much scope for enlightenment. Through Guns'n'Roses i swept past the pixes into metal and then out into Grunge missing the pixes on the way back again! In college i roadied and pissed around my friends bands (big up Fergie, Chubs, Batty and Canning). First gig was Reading 94 or 95. Green Day, Foo fighters, Hole, Smashing Pumpkins. I also got caught up in Brit pop and went to college with sunglasses, nail varnish and a suit whist NUS president. Representin' I was a Blur fan by the way. Oasis are still shite.
Now everyone was a Prodigy fan. Ravers liked the Experience and Metalerers and grungers etc liked Jilted. We didn't think it was a dance album even though thats what we did to it every time we went out. It was having a spare tenner (those were the days) and asking my fellow indie mate what he recomends. HE hands me the Chmical Bros first album. I nearly shat my adams apple. I was away now what more was there to come?
The summer before uni involved discovering D'n'B. Paul with his alex Reece album and Chuzzlewit with his Metalhedz album. And going to the Brunel Rooms in Swindon and Labryith in tottenham with Sally my Big Brown eyed beautiful girlfriend at the time. Thank you both.
Uni hit and i went ballistic. When you release too much pent up fustration at one go. like sending me to the playground that is brighton when i'm 18. or a japanese business man at a bukake party. So i went to the Big Beat Boutique alot and met Barry, Sonic Boo and Tim, Citizen K through various liasons in it environs. Barry and i found gainfull employment filling the Boutique for bottons and partying hard. Tim just partyied hard. After a year of getting ourselfs in with the strata of Brighton club scene Barry and i decided to copy the freeform format of the Boutique and do it in a pub upstairs room. Tim was draughted in as the other resident. I couldn't DJ at the time (still can't properly). It was empty and we had to bribe our mates to come. Borrowing some sound equipment brought us into close proximity of Dennis the Good Doctor (one of Tim's mates) and after a good dressing down about being a bunch of jokers he was in and Bust the Box was away. We were offered downstairs on a bank hol sunday and things really kicked off! Lengends were written and grew infrount of us. Simple really good music for free in a good ol' pub with no rules gave it a magical vibe. Tim was getting away with all sorts of shit in the name of music and we saw the light. If its good play it and play it at a good time. I eventually plucked up courage and some seven inches and hit the decks. Keeping it warm up i found a love of seeing what i could get away with.
I've been hugly influenced by all the other Bust The Box DJs showing me the best bits of music from everwhere. Except Barry's weak house and breaks selection.
I was also busy with the day job putting on Drum'n'Bass and Hip Hop clubs. This allowed me to work alongside the hero's i'd listened to in Basingstoke and get the latest tunes first. So i'd be getting educated about music from all angles from all around. I've met some strange people with strange collections. The camp guy with the biggest pop collection. The gangsta rap compendium owned by the cheeky cockney. Jungle mixtapes by elderly ravers and Blues singers by fashion geeks. I like dipping in to peoples collections. getting them to show me the gems.
Bust the Box is now 9 years old! having moved from The Hobgoblin to hectors to the hub to the pressure point to the volks to the concorde 2 and now we are at the Volks and Pressure point as they don't seem to mind the cops turning up. And there not scared of us.
I've stopped running D'n'B clubs, after booking the biggest D'n'B lineup ever in Europe and i can now be found Knocking out Don't Panic flyer packs to the people dem.
I can also be found alongside Mr Stig Duval the Pig as the 'Pig and Goat show'
I'm avaible to perfom my records at weddings, bahmitsva, parties and i'm damm hott at funerals! Ring me on 07776131718 or [email protected]
