I'll give most things a listen and will never discount a band/style of music until I've given it a try. However as a rule of thumb I plump more for anything passionate and emotive, mostly centering around the metal/alt. genres.

Anything by Terry Pratchett. The man is a true genius and cannot do wrong in my eyes. Exquisite Corpse - Poppy Z Brite The Secret Life of Laszlo; Count Dracula - Roderick Anscombe Anno Dracula/The Bloody Red Baron - Kim Newman Most of HP Lovecraft's output
I don't succumb to the idea of heroes. I do however have a handful of people who inspire me. They are:
Terry Pratchett - literary genius
Fear Factory - musically they turned my life around and give me the inspiration to keep writing
George St Pierre - UFC fighter and dyed in the wool warrior. His never quit, give it your all attitude should be seen as an inspiration to us all. Never settle for second best and always strive to be the best you can
