12-year-old rapper, writer and lyricist Dertrick Winn, Jr., better known as D Tyme is a native of Austin, Texas and since his April 2006 debut in the capital city, he has quickly become a household name. The two most commonly asked questions by his fans when they hear his rhymes are Who writes for you? and who does your music? The protégé of SoulWarrior Entertainment of Austin, owned by his father, super producer Fire Winn, laughs when he answers both of those questions. Writing his own music and lyrics is not a challenge for this future star of Texas. At the age of 10 months old, he was speaking in five-word sentences and he learned to write in print at the age of three. At 15 months old, D Tyme was diagnosed with a rare childhood cancer, unilateral Retinoblastoma, in his right eye. After three years of various radiation treatments, two relapses, and significant damage to his left eye from treatment, D Tyme had his right eye removed and replace with a prosthesis and then went on to undergo 18 months of chemotherapy at the Childrens Hospital of Austin. Bright and ambitious from birth, D Tyme did not allow his disability to stop him from doing anything his friends did. Even though reading was visually challenging, D Tyme always had his nose in a book or a dictionary. In kindergarten he was identified as gifted and talent, every year since first grade he has received commended scores on all state exams and at his fifth grade graduation he earned the honor Most Prolific Writer in the entire fifth grade. As an artist, D Tyme combined his talent as a writer with his gift and passion for music. When asked the question, How would you describe your style of music? D Tyme responded "as an artist who can follow the stereotype of a rapper but who can also be very intellectual and be very open minded to others music. My style is...my style. I always try to do new things that no one else tries, from my style of clothes to the games I play". When asked about his musical inspiration, D Tyme had this to say: "Since kindergarten, writing has always been one of my favorite things to do and my teachers have always been intrigued by my extensive vocabulary. My father inspired me to be a singer, and my uncle inspired me to rap. Once I grew up, I realized how well I can put words together. And since I didn't hear a lot of other music growing up, rap was what I knew. My mother got me started in church choir when I was 5, but whenever I couldn't go there I would sing songs on the radio. In fifth grade I joined my school choir, and now Im in the sixth grade, and instead of band or orchestra, I joined the year-long choir. I plan to join the varsity choir next year".At the rate D Tyme is going, next year will prove to be a successful one. An honor roll magnet student at Fulmore Humanities, Law and Government Magnet School, the seventh-grader will return to school more experienced than when he left. Since his debut at the Travis Heights Elementary School 2006 Annual Spring Carnival, he has won 5 local auditions, performed at 4 local open-mic nights for teens, performed for Austin's annual Juneteenth community celebration, performed and participated in the City of Austin's National Night Out, performed the City of Austin's Summer Jams where he shared the same stage with Orlando Brown, Kiotti and the Bebe Kids, Kayo, Ace Duce, Trae and Cherish, performed for pre-concert show for BET's Up Close and Personal Tour featuring Chris Brown and Neyo, and received accolades from deejays of the Beat 104.3 and Hot 93.3. All in one summer, all before the age of 13.
