How can you tell that someone's a multi talent?
Easy. Try asking what they're best at, then check out the evasive answer.
Maria Marcus is a multi talent. Not only does she write her own material,
but she sings, plays, program and produce the songs herself - in her own
studio. Her songwriting treasure of over 100 original tunes has a scope
that's simply astonishing, until you realise that she's been writing and
recording since she was a teenager.
Maria stepped out into the spotlight with her debut single "Why (You
Confuse My Mind)" - the leading track to the Wallander movie "MasterMind",
which premiered in December 2005.
When the Wallander team was looking for a main theme, Maria got the
opportunity to write it. She started by listening to Adam Nordén's
instrumental music. Based on this, she wrote the intimate song "Why (You
Confuse My Mind)" with lyrical help from Eskobar's Daniel Bellqvist. The
film team's reaction was, needless to say, overwhelming.
In the summer of 2006 the next single "Music Is" was released, which made
it to Top 20 on the Swedish Singles Chart and is frequently played on
radio in sweden, denmark and all the way down to france.
In december 2006 Maria recorded a duet with the Danish songwriter and
artist Brinck on his song "In The End I Started", the leading track for
the second season of the succesful danish TV series "Anna Pihl".
Maria Marcus was born in the northern town, Umeå, but grew up in the
mid-Swedish town, Skövde. As a young girl she day dreamed herself away
into the world of music, she was fascinated by "beautiful music,
sentimental music, melancholy music" and she also soon discovered that
movie soundtracks had it's own very special attraction.
She became interested in computers in school, and soon learned how to
digitally record and produce a song. Songwriting and producing fueled her
creativity further.
At age 16 she sent her first demos to different record companies in
Stockholm and it was not long until she was noticed. Initially she looked
at herself mostly as a songwriter. Singing was something she did out of
necessity when making her demos. "But then poeple said that my songs was
so personal that I'd probably do even better also performing them myself.
So from that moment I started to regard myself as an artist as well".
Her main instrument, apart from her voice, is piano. "If I need a guitar
or bass overdub for a demo, I can do that too, but I’m not always
comfortable playing it live".
Maria moved back to the north of Sweden â€and I’ve finally found my homeâ€,
she say’s with a smile.
Producing is one of Maria's biggest passions and in Örnsköldsvik where she
lives, she writes and produces both for herself and for other artists.
Her skill in this area has taken more than one producer with surprise.
Instead of a green vocalist, in walks a seasoned studio professional with
a vast grip on the digital side of things.
So far Maria has cooperated with Anders Eliasson (Lambretta), Martin
Hansen (The Rasmus, Robyn, Jennifer Brown, Lisa Nilsson), Rob Wells
(Backstreet Boys, Nick Lachey), Christopher Ward (Alannah Myles) just to
name a few, but she found a more long term working partner in Pontus Frisk
(Eskobar, Andreas Johnson, Dilba), who produced â€Why (You Confuse My Mind)
and â€Music Is†and together with Maria the song "I remember".
â€I got to know Pontus through Bonnier Amigo Music Group and he has
inspired me so much when it comes to producing, he helped me find the
sound that I was searching for. I hope to work with him again but for the
moment I enjoy producing my own materialâ€.
In may 2007 Maria decided to stand on her own feet, intending to release
her music on her own label. This decision have fueled her inspiration
further as a songwriter, artist and producer.
Maria’s music is definately the consequence of love...
