About Me

The documentary film, No Place Like Home: The History of Hip Hop in the Lower East Side, is the untold story of Hip Hop's road to success through the Lower East Side (LES) of Manhattan, and about the LES artists who contributed to that success. Its more than a story about music, its a story of a diverse but close community that over the last 35 years has made its mark on Hip Hop culture, and to this day helps to create and define it.

No Place Like Home chronicles the voices and visions of early innovators and new school MCs, DJs, Street Artists, and B Boys and B Girls from the LES, featuring:

Early innovators including MCs: Fly, Mr. Magic, Harriet, Jimmy D, Carly Carl and Mellow Dee. DJs: Sir Gamble, Kool B, Apache, Ice, Sammy Sam, Carmello, Silva Sir-Fa, Street Artists and Graphic Technologists: SOE aka DJ Brass Knuckles, Second, SOE, Chico, and King As-One. B-Boys BAM, Cool C, Wiggles, Kool AD, Walt Jigga, Chino, Ben and Chickee.

Emerging artists including MCs: B. Jones, FOKIS, Tru-Life, Raze, Pete Da Blame, The Ghetto Inmates, Demo tha Pro, Beyond Rest, Manueltio Da Cakee, Prodical & Laz, E-Hustle, Pretty Young Pimps, G & AB, and DJ BammBamm, among others.

Since the beginning of Manhattan's history, there's always been tragic magic on the Lower East Side. The film looks at a peoples' history of the Lower East Side and Lower Manhattan, from Dutch conquest, through The Five Points era, to the present day, including 9/11, exploring the cultural and political roots of a community that has influenced and inspired generations of artists.

A film by LES In Da Backpack Productions, No Place Like Home: The History of Hip Hop in the Lower East Side was directed and filmed by K.F. Harris and produced by Troy Harris and Diana Puente. The Harris brothers are from the Baruch Houses in the Lower East Side of New York City. In addition to the production team, hundreds of Lower East Side artists and community members have come together to support this documentary.
