MY INTERVIEW ON BLACKPLANET:Stephanie Nolan: A Fashion Go-Getter
By: Sherri L. Smith Posted: Mar 14
BlackPlanet Members Hit the Runway
With the advent of Tyra Banks' hit show, "America's Next Top Model", almost everyone wants to throw their hat into the fashion arena.
But modeling is more than giving good face and wearing clothes exceedingly well. It also takes hard work and sacrifice. So when BlackPlanet members wanted to get some expert advice on the cutthroat world of couture, we turned to our associates at Ford Modeling Agency.
Ford provided some of their top-notch recruiters to field member questions during a series of online chats. While most members received helpful information, a lucky few, like Stephanie Nolan, received a lot more.
Stephanie Nolan, aka Aquarius Beauty88, is a long time BlackPlanet member as well as an avid supporter of the Style Channel. So keen was the 19 year old beauty's interest in modeling, that a Ford Model agent contacted her soon after the chat. BlackPlanet recently caught up with Stephanie to get the dish on that fateful call.
BP: How long have you been a BlackPlanet member? SN: I've been a member since October 2006.
BP: You've been an avid supporter of our Style channel. What is it about fashion that you love?
SN: Well, I love fashion because you can create so many different looks and it enhances our individuality in society.
BP: Who is you're your current favorite designer?
SN: Oh wow! I would have to say my favorite designer would have to be Laila Kay of Laila Kay Couture. She's an up and coming designer as well as a stylist. She has really unique clothes that appeal to all ethnicities - Black, white, Asian, just everyone.
BP: As far as your career, are you more interested in modeling or would you like to become a designer as well?
SN: I really have no aspirations to be a designer, but the style that I see today I would try, but I would rather stick to my own thing.
BP: How would you describe your style?
SN: Tomboy meets sexy. My outfit would consist of some baggy jeans and a really formfitting shirt.
BP: Which interests you more, print modeling or runway?
SN: Actually, I'm interested in both categories. For runway, you have to have a height of at least 5'9" and with print you have to be very versatile with your look. I have both the height and versatility so I feel I can handle both industries.
BP: I first ran into you while we were conducting our first live chat with Ford Modeling Agency. What's happened since the chat?
SN: Actually a commercial print coordinator from Ford contacted me with possible opportunities with Ford Models. She really handled all of my questions and I was able to get a better understanding of the modeling industry.
BP: What steps have you taken so far on your road to becoming a model?
SN: I was just signed to a local agency in Atlanta.
BP: Congratulations! Have you started work yet?
SN: Thank you. I just got signed yesterday so it's very new.
BP: What advice do you have for other young people who are interested in getting into the industry?
SN: I would tell them to do their research. Research is a vital key into being successful in the modeling industry. There are a lot of people who ask for money up front. Just last year, around when the style channel launched, I was asked by an agency to provide them with a couple thousand dollars for a cover charge. I was like "No Way!"
You shouldn't kiss on the first date as they call it. Also, just keep checking in with the person you're working with at the time because there were times when I had managers that I had to stay on top of. So make sure that the person you're dealing with doesn't slack off. Also you have to keep in shape, even if you're a plus-size model.
