Tomasson first started playing football as a five year-old with his hometown club Solrød Boldklub. At nine years of age, he moved to Køge BK. In 1994, he moved to Holland and signed his first professional contract, with the Dutch club Heerenveen. A first-team regular by the 1995-96 season, Tomasson was the club top scorer for the season as well, netting 14 goals in 30 league matches. He increased this tally in 1996-97 to 18, and was top-scorer for the club once again.
Two good seasons with Heerenveen resulted in Tomasson getting a call to the Denmark national team, and he made his debut on March 29, 1997, against Croatia. There was also an interest shown by other clubs, and he completed a high profile move to the English Premiership club Newcastle United in 1997. However he returned to the Dutch league the next season, joining Feyenoord. His first season there, 1998-99, turned out to be successful for the club, as they won the league as well as the Dutch Super Cup. Although he missed out on the 1998 FIFA World Cup, Tomasson was part of the Danish team at Euro 2000. He also played in the following edition of both tournaments, scoring four goals in the 2002 FIFA World Cup and three in Euro 2004, where he made the All-Star Squad.
In 2002, Tomasson's contract with Feyenoord was expiring, and after their UEFA Cup victory, he moved to the Serie A club AC Milan on a free transfer. The 2002-03 season, Tomasson's first at Milan, saw them winning the Italian Cup and the UEFA Champions League. They then won the Italian Super Cup and the Serie A title the next season. Tomasson left the Italian club for Stuttgart in 2005.
Tomasson have played 81 matches scoring 39 goals for the Danish National Team. He will take the record.
