BESOS AND ALL THE LIGHT TO YOU!
THE SHOW FESTIVAL 5 DE MAYO @ FLUSHING MEADOWS, WAS A SERIOUS BLAST!! THANKS TO THOSE WHO CAME AND TO THOSE NEW FRIENDS!! BESHOS
From the first notes of the haunting, cinematic first single No Veras Mi Corazon Llorar (You Won't See My Heart Cry) from her upcoming new album, Leila Colom tries to answer the question on a lot of her fan's minds: Where did one of the most promising stars from the NYC Latin rock scene go these past couple of years? And the answer turns out to be a story about growth, reinvention and the wonderful struggle to be an original artist in the capital of the world.
As the lead singer for the alternative rock band Antigua (the name of a colonial city founded in 1543), Leila quickly attracted a loyal fan following and saw early successes, writing songs and collaborating with Didi Gutman from "Brazilian Girls" in the soundtrack of the award-winning Washington Heights, and the controversial Latin Boys Go to Hell, and releasing Sue..os (Dreams), an album praised for its unique sound and thought-provoking lyrics.
Later she collaborated with many musicians, including songs with electronica duo "Pacha Massive" included in the soundtrack to La Mujer de Mi Hermano (My brother's wife) and upcoming album "All Good Things". Along the way, almost by accident, she also started lending her voice for jingles and voiceovers. Fans might have recognized her voice in the national ad campaigns for JCPenney, Macy's, Clinique, McDonald's and others.
The daughter of professional ballet dancers, herself a ballerina for many years, art and music were in her life from the very beginning. New York was always a constant goal in her mind. Her parents had performed there before she was born and she promised herself that she would do what they could not, come live at the capital of the world. "I love Guatemala with all my heart, but this city is where I found myself and my calling, and I'm the happiest here" she says.
And slowly the city, the signs everywhere, her ambitions and the occasional fan that would run into her and ask what she was doing, all started to push her toward the goal of becoming a solo singer. "I guess I had to go through the search we all go through, no one escapes that. It's slow and sometimes painful but when you find your way it's the happiest realization".
Today, she is hard at work in her solo album due this summer partnering with producer and composer Jose Luis Revelo. Look for a series of showcases and shows throughout the year. She wants to stay close, through the web, to the fans that treated her so well in the past. "I'd love it if people would drop by and listen to the new songs I'm creating for them. All of you inspire my music and humble me".
