o-s-da sunalei
(Good Morning)...
We n’ de ya ho, We n’ de ya ho
We n’ de ya ho, We n’ de ya ho, ho ho ho
He ya ho he ya, Ya ya ya
The above are the lyrics to a traditional Cherokee song that was/is sung to greet the new day and to give thanks to the Great Spirit for being able to witness that new day. What it translates to is
I am of the Great Spirit, Ho! I am of the Great Spirit, Ho!
I am of the Great Spirit, Ho! I am of the Great Spirit, Ho! It is so, it is so.
Great Spirit, Great Spirit, Great Spirit

...........................First off I would like to say that I am a big fan of my nephew Christopher Maleki (Spike on Passions). He is a great Actor, Photographer, and Poet. He takes after his great grandmother, my grandmother, Myrtle Ivy Rose Munson who was a Vaudeville performer and writer. Myrtle's parents, Millard Rose (Roosa) and Margath Steele were also performers of the stage. Their talents were not limited to them alone, these talents have also come through Chris and many others in our line of descent. Chris, I take my hat off to you. You are a very talented man. Keep up the great work........................................................

.........Caryl was born on May 8, 1969 in Del Rio Texas at Val Verde Memorial Hospital. He was raised on the road as his family traveled around the country. He spent much of his time living in a 1954 Metro Parcel delivery van by International Harvester that his father originally used as a piano delivery van until converting it to a motor home. For eight years off and on this van was home for Caryl. Every once in a while he had the privilege of actually living in a real house, but would always end up back in that van. They traveled from town-to-town and state-to-state. Enrolled in one school after another was a norm for this young boy. He never had time to make any friends. In later years this affected his social life in a negative way......................................When Caryl was 9 years old his father sold the van a bought a travel trailer. They lived in this trailer traveling from California to Arizona and back to California. During this time of travel, they spent about 6 months in Quartzite Arizona. They lived on a dirt lot behind Ben Scott's Tavern. This is where Caryl got his interest in Gems. Ben Scott not only was a bartender, he was also a gem collector. Caryl would watch him cutting and polishing stones behind the tavern on the weekends......................................The nearest school to where Caryl lived at that time was in Erenburg. He was in the third grade in Mr. Concord's class. It was NOT one of his favorite schools. He had no friends there and the teachers were a bit harsh compared to other schools he had attended before. In this school the students were subject to physical discipline. If you got out of line you would get the paddle. Caryl managed to avoid the paddle, but nonetheless, he still would rather be in a different school......................................After spending a few months there Caryl and his family moved to Victorville California. They lived in a trailer park called Sun and Fun. It was on the outskirts of town. Caryl's father had a friend named George Hoover who owned a tavern near there called The Rocket Inn. Well, George's wife was Caryl's Reg. Room teacher at the school he was attending at the time. This is an example of the type of towns his father liked to live in. SMALL towns in the desert. Their stay wasn't long in Victorville and in a few months they were on the move again. Now (1978) they were on their way to Lancaster California. Not too far from Victorville. This time they got to live in a real house......................................This is where Caryl was enrolled in East Side Union School. It was about 23 miles from their house. A bus would pick him and his brother up each morning for the long drive to school. He finally was in a school where he was sure to make friends. He was there for almost 2 years. This was one of the longest periods he spent in one school. He attended twenty-three different elementary schools by the time he was eleven years old. Just can't name them all......................................On Sep. 8, 1980 Caryl's father was diagnosed with Lung Cancer. He was told that he would only make it a year if he were lucky. He only made it 3 months. On December 19, 1980 Caryl's father passed away. He was so hurt by this. What was he to do without a father? That was his Super Man......................................After having a funeral for his father, Caryl and his family went to Grants Pass Oregon where he attended yet another school. Then to Portland Oregon they went. He was then enrolled at Peninsula Elementary School in 6th grade. Then he transferred to Whittaker Middle School for seventh and eighth grades......................................Caryl had a friend in eighth grade named Sarada Touch who would become the best man at his wedding 18 years later......................................In 1985 Caryl registered at Franklin High School in South East Portland. He attended classes there for the first half of his freshman year. Then to Jefferson he went in North Portland for the remainder of his schooling......................................In 1987 he went to Glendale California. He got a job working at the East Wing Import Store in the Glendale Galleria. He sold Oriental carvings there. This job lasted for a few months. Then he went to work for Hyenco, a telemarketing business selling night security systems. During this time, Caryl was living with his half sister Judy. She wanted him to get into acting like her son Christopher Maleki......................................Judy decided one day to take Caryl to Disc Casting Agency in Los Angeles. He put together a portfolio and did a screen test. Then after returning to Oregon a few months later, he got a phone call from the agency. They offered him a role in a movie called Daddy's Little Girl. Caryl wanted so much to take the part, but the only problem was how would he get down there in time? It was Friday evening and they wanted him there on Tuesday morning to start work. It was close to 1000 miles away. The only way to get there in time would be by plane. He had no money to buy any plane ticket, so he had to turn down the job. He gave up the chance of a lifetime......................................In August 1988 he enrolled at Columbia College of Business where he got a degree in accounting. That same year he started working for Stoney Weeks at the Morning Rainbow in St. Johns near North Portland. It was a Native American gift shop. He continued this trade for many years. Selling his work to businesses and at pow-wows and flea markets. Sometimes he would do carpentry and concrete work jobs as well, but he always went back to doing his crafts......................................In 1990 Caryl went to work for his Uncle Stan in Milwaukee Oregon. It was only a few miles away. He and his brother Adrian did landscaping and fence building for Stan. This was a good way to make money, as Stan was quite wealthy and paid very well. Caryl was making almost $300 a week working for his uncle. This job lasted for the entire summer and partially into the fall months. The following year Stan passed away......................................Then in the summer of 1991 Caryl went to work on Swan Island for Jake's Sea Food Warehouse. It was only a temporary job and ended after the Christmas Holliday was over......................................Caryl still had his beadwork to keep him occupied. Although he had many jobs over the years, he always had his crafts to fall back on. Always returning to work for Stoney Weeks on the side. Whenever he was not at work somewhere else, he would be working for Stoney creating some of the most beautiful pieces of beadwork. That is what he was best at. Even to this day he is still designing his own pieces......................................From 1996 to 1998 he rebuilt Schwinn bikes as an on the side business. He would spend 3 to 4 days a week doing this. On the weekends he would set up in the Less Schwab parking lot to sell his bikes to passers-by. This was a good way to make extra money. He would use some of that money to buy new woodworking tools......................................On Dec. 19, 1999 Caryl quit smoking. He picked this date because it was the same day that he father died from smoking related problems 19 years prior. Then he met Susanna Marie Sage, the girl next door. Really, she was the girl next door. They lived in a duplex. Caryl started talking to her over the fence that separated their back yards. He asked her to dinner and she accepted. About seven months later he proposed to her. They were married in front of a judge on December 21, 2000. Then on February 3, 2001 they had a second wedding. The first was a legal ceremony and the second was a religious ceremony....................................................

............................How Caryl & Suzi Met. Written by Susanna herself...............
Susanna lived next door to Caryl for a year and a few months. On Caryl's 30th birthday he dropped hints that he would like a café latte that Suzi was fond of making. She brought over two latte's, one for his mother Judy and one for him, and she wished him a happy birthday. He surprised her with a hand made candleholder with a hand carved bird on it. She liked it but she was a bit confused why he gave her a gift on his birthday. She thanked him and went home. A few days later he sent his mother over to ask her if she would go to the backyard because he wanted to talk to her. He very shyly asked her over for dinner. She tried to think up an excuse why she couldn't have dinner with him, (she was also quite shy). She accepted his offer because he was so very nervous and she didn't want to hurt his feelings. Caryl worked very hard on making a picture perfect dinner. When it came time to enjoy the meal, it took them hours to eat. They both enjoyed the experience so much that they began to see each other every day. Soon Caryl was giving her poems and flowers from his own garden every day. He began walking her to the bus to see her off to work in the mornings. Soon his garden could not produce enough flowers so he began making her handmade silk flowers, and with his poems professed his love. She took a little longer giving him her heart, however one day divine intervention helped. They had gone on a walk to a local park where Caryl and Suzi had stopped to sit under a tree. Caryl had a Hacky Sack foot bag with him when he asked her if she had any feelings for him. Nervously she told him that if the foot bag went into his shirt pocket on his tee shirt that she was getting feelings. She closed her eyes and tossed the bag, in his pocket it landed. He always claimed he didn't move around to try to catch it. Soon she also professed her love and they grew closer. Then one day he gave her a heart shaped box. In this box was another box that read "Will you marry me?". Within the second box was a lovely sapphire ring. She never did answer him but she put the ring on and went home to show her parents. Her mother wasn't surprised; she simply asked "what took him so damn long". A month and a half later they got married. To be continued………..........................................

..................................A look-back to August 1983,
Yakima Washington...............So my name was given. To become wise like a teacher; my spirit shall soar high like the Eagle. Invited to become a brother to my Yakima friend, Jerome “Wacomic†Ian Tecumseh Goudy, and to become like a son to his father Duane Simmons Tecumseh Sr.; I was a 14-year-old boy, honored by this Native American family. In the Sahaptin dialect, my name is called Sapsikw'alá K'ámamul (Eagle Teacher or Eagle of Wisdom). In Cherokee, the language spoken by my ancestor Nowattah Hay, son of Stekoih Luca Hay, my name would be called U-wo-ha-li A-ga-ta-hna-i (Wise Eagle).
