I used to party a lot but all I did was dance
I used to dress fly u can tell in my stance
Yea, I sported gold chains but it never was my status
Didn’t put diamonds in my teeth to show that I had it
I used to rap about socially conscious issues
This generation of change dang I really missed ya
I wore shell topped Adidas and Kango lids
My pants fit my body weren’t 10 sizes too big
Street poetry was the name of my game
I flowed too quick to give my rhymes a name
Holla if u hear me...up jump the lyric
People understood ‘cause they could really hear it
My biggest audience was the kids at Ruckers Park
‘Cause they really appreciated this sacred art
All I needed was two turntables and a mic
Do dat do dat got the crowd hype
I consisted of tribes and developments
Slick Ricks, Pete Rocks, and Digable Planets
No one cared what mainstream was
My songs were hits if they made it to the club
I taught self-empowerment and social funk
Instructed dance movements like the humpty hump
And on the occasion I slipped in slow tune
‘Cause LL proved that we need love too
While the state of what I am has changed
It’s important to know the foundation’s the same
I just encourage the new cats in the game
Stay true to who I am, ‘cause hip-hop's my name
