April 5th 2007, I brought a little, beautiful angel into the world at 10:34 pm. Evelynn was born at 9 pounds, zero ounces, 20 inches long, head 14 1/2. Her cheeks are huge and adorable. She is the most AMAZING baby girl in the world and I adore her so much. Shes not too fussy of a baby and is actually as patient as a baby can be. She was perfectly healthy and I thank god I was able to nurture her in my womb well. Carrying her in my belly for 40 weeks was the most amazing experience of my life. No moment means more to me then the moment they placed her on my chest right after I delivered her. I love you Evelynn.
I'm the VERY PROUD YOUNG mother to a little hero, Evelynn Marie. June 24th 2007 my world stopped when my daughter Evelynn was put into the Pediatric ICU by the hands of her "father". For 12 days my daughter struggled for her life, but Evelynn wasn't ready to go home to God.
My daughter was 10 weeks old when she nearly lost her life and she fought very hard. Her strength is admirable. She put up one helluva fight in the PICU but unfortunately her fight has just begun.
After elbowing my baby girl off of our bed, Joshua Cohen proceeded to kick Evelynn in the head 5 times. He then shook her violently for 30 seconds
He admitted all of this in matter of factly.
Evelynn will face many obstacles in the years to come as she faces the challenges of neurological damage and nerve damage in her eyes.
Evelynn must take 2 seizure medications twice a day and even still she has many seizures DAILY. At 16 months old now, Evelynn has the mentality of a 2-3 month old. She cannot sit up unsupported, crawl, or stand, she cant even hold her sippy cup.
She has microcephalus
Low muscle tone and limited use of her left side
Due to her hydrocephalus, at 5 months old she needed two surgeries. The second surgery was to put two VP shunts in her head so that the fluid may continuously drain into her belly where it is absorbed
Without the shunts, her brain would further shrink fron the cerebral fluid and eventually cause death.
Evelynn is also legally blind. The whole pathway from her eyes to her brain is damaged - there is no substitute.
Even still, Evelynn is one of the lucky few to survive this terrible EPIDEMIC known as Shaken Baby Syndrome.
I can't emphasize enough the importance of walking away when your fustrated with a baby. My daughter nearly lost her life but not all victims of SBS and child abuse are survivors. NEVER SHAKE OR ABUSE A BABY! WALK AWAY!
Child Abuse & Shaken Baby/Impact Syndrome IS recognizable and PREVENTABLE.Education is the first and most important step in preventing SBS. Knowing what to do when a baby is inconsolable and the learning signs and symptoms will save your child's life.
50% of offenders are the biological parents, predominatly the father who tends to be in his early 20's.
17% of offenders are mother's boyfriends
17% also takes account for non-relatives - Could be your BEST FRIEND!
6% Are Step Parents
10% of offenders are other
If your child appears lethargic, is irritable, has a bulging fontanelle (Bulging soft spot), has seizures, is vomiting, or having trouble breathing, these may be signs of Shaken Baby Syndrome
Dont ever assume the person who is watching your baby "would never hurt your child". Nobody knows what they are capable of until they've ALLOWED themselves to reach the point of "losing it". Be cautious of bruises and ALWAYS question the person whose been watching your baby - Nomatter who they are!
