Many people tend to stereotype me and my friends because of the way we dress, speak and act because they tend to not see beyond our physical attributes. Well I guess I will take this time to clear up any wrong impressions and show a little bit of the real Karen.
Currently I am a full-time student at UNLV pursuing a BS degree in Biochemistry while filling the prerequisites for medical school. My ultimate dream is to provide medical care to the less fortunate people especially to the children who are in dire need of medical attention and have no means of acquiring them.
I am very goal- and career-oriented but recently I have lost the drive that had pushed me through the many years of scholastic endeavors that I have pursued. Now that I have been reminded and I have been rejuvenated, mind, body and soul, I am ready to embark into more pursuits that would help me achieve my goals.
I am an optimist who views things as happening for a reason and I am a born romantic who romanticizes everything. I tend to look for the goodness in people although most of the time I find none. Life experiences had taught me that sometimes skepticism and cynicism would help me stay grounded and not be whisked away by romanticism.
I am a loyal friend and a very giving person that many tend to take advantage of me. Now, I have learned to say no and I have learned to selectively choose the people to whom I will give my loyalty to.
I am a very analytical person in a sense that I tend to overanalyze things in order to make sense out of them. I have realized that sometimes things are really as simple as they seem and that I should live life as if there is no tomorrow.
Living in a society like ours, I, like many of us, have been so engrossed with our own dilemmas that we have forgotten that the world that we live in is not just what our day-to-day lives revolved around. I have been lost in my own selfish world that a visit to my motherland revealed a whole new perspective that I will forever hold in my heart. While I was busy pitying myself for some petty reason that had happened to me during the week or the day, I have forgotten that many people are suffering far more than I am. The things that I have taken for granted are luxuries for millions of people. I have forgotten my sole purpose of my dreams. I was reminded by a very special person that the people around me and the things that I have in my life should suffice and that I should turn my attention to the more important issues. She reminded me that I am going through all these sacrifices for a reason: to be a servant of the people who are in dire need. She reminded me that the finer things in life are found in simplest things surrounding us. She taught me to appreciate everything around me. RIP Severina Bacerra. You are forever in our hearts and minds.
I have loved and I have hurt. I have dreamed and I have fallen. I have won and I have lost. Now that I am found, I will live.
