He becomes a recording artist, fusing Motown sound with island Reggae to produce funky, mellow beats that reflect both sides of Cello's musical heritage. Compared to D’angelo, Sam Cooke and Al Green, Cello's music hasn't left behind his island roots. "The music of Motown has become very important to me," says Cello. "The Bahamas will always be a part of my soul, where I began, but I believe there is also room for the history I have found here in Detroit. I am so inspired by the work of the Four Tops, the Temptations, Otis Redding, Isaac Hayes and Marvin Gaye. Here, in Detroit, is where they began." In his own work, the smooth, sweet vocals Motown made famous are enhanced by sultry Caribbean rhythms, producing Cello's own version of Hip-Hop Soul. Music has been in Cello’s heart since he was a child, when he and his family sang together in church. Surrounded by musicians, a veteran of talent shows, theater and vocal quartets, Cello was discovered at a musical competition in Nassau, by the Bahamian group Coda. Now, 15 years later, Cello is a solo artist in his own right, singing, writing songs, playing keyboards and producing his new album, Imported. Cello immigrated to the United States several years ago, while still a member of Coda. When Coda disbanded in the late 1990s, Cello returned to Nassau, where he launched a recording studio, producing albums for major Nassau recording artists. After a lot of hard work (and a little bit of luck), Cello hooked up with a Detroit film crew filming a Bahamian sit-com. Cello came on board as the Music Supervisor and wound up landing the title role in the series. In 2001, he followed another film crew to Detroit, where he connected with the local music scene. His latest film, in which he plays a lead character, is The Ultimate, an indie release that was due out in 2004. Carrying with him the joy that comes from growing up in the islands, Cello wants everyone to feel good when they hear his music. "There is a saying I carry around with me," Cello says. “'What comes from the heart, reaches the heart.'” That is the source of my music, what I want to communicate to people—what is in my heart, I want to be in other people’s hearts."
