311 was formed in 1990 in Omaha, Nebraska by five self-described "friends for life" (singer/guitarist Nick Hexum, singer S.A. Martinez, guitarist Tim Mahoney, drummer Chad Sexton and the bassist known only as P-Nut), whose common link was a passion for both music and life that eventually brought them together to make music with a positive message behind it. All five members of 311 grew up in the 1970's in Omaha, Nebraska. Nick Hexum, Tim Mahoney and Chad Sexton lived on the west side of town and went to Westside High School together. P-Nut and SA Martinez lived on the south side of town and went to Bryan High School together. The first real show for 311 was June 10, 1990, opening for Fugazi at Sokol Hall just south of Omaha. After gigging locally (and by all reports quickly conquering the local music scene there), the quintet moved to Los Angeles. They rented a small house in Van Nuys, California and all moved in together. These were very lean times for the band. Just before disintegrating into total poverty, they were signed to Capricorn Records.
311 have released several albums, including 1992's Music, 1993's Grassroots, and 1995's 311 (aka the "Blue" album), the latter reaching number 12 on the album chart, selling three million copies worldwide, and sporting the tracks "All Mixed Up" and "Down."
The "Music" tour almost ended tragically during a trip between Springfield, MO and Kansas City on I-44. Nick was driving the RV when he noticed it was running hot. When he began to pull over, he saw smoke and flames coming up from under the vehicle. He quickly pulled onto the shoulder of the highway and the band members jumped out through the flames. Nick, the last one out, received second degree burns from jumping through the wall of flames. The RV exploded. The van we were towing caught fire and also burned to the ground along the interstate. Traffic was backed up for 2 miles. All of our clothes, equipment and personal possessions were destroyed. We had some minor burns and scrapes, but no major injuries. Nick's hair was singed, so he shaved his head. Although we were definitely shaken - they decided not to let the tragedy end the tour and to keep going. We headlined a show the next day (SHARKFEST at Sharky's Brewery in Omaha) with borrowed equipment. You can hear about the RV incident in the song Omaha Stylee:
"My bros and I were driving the RV bleeding flames us leaping through fire surviving - zoned with no home there was fire all on it - umm, let me have my life, I want it!"
In July of '94 they released their second cd "Grassroots" (now Gold). By this time they were touring the US non-stop. They moved out of the house in Van Nuys - put their stuff into a storage space and literally just lived on the road. They put all their energy into their live show and steadily developed an incredible grassroots following nationwide.
In 1996, following a non-stop year of touring, the band released Enlarged to Show Detail, a home video of live performances taken from amphitheater shows in Kansas City and Denver, as well behind-the-scenes looks at life on the road. That the video has been certified platinum in sales is strong testament to the unique relationship the band has with its fans. In 1997, Transistor, a double album of new songs on one CD, was released, and the group mounted its most ambitious tour yet, a worldwide stretch of concerts intended to enlarge the band's already large and loyal fan base. "When we first started the band, we were always sure something good was going to happen," says drummer Chad Sexton. 311's 1997 headlining tour in support of the "Transistor" album drew an average of 10,000 people per night in the US. The band also toured Europe, UK, Australia, New Zealand and Japan. Live followed in 1998, and a year later, 311 returned with Soundsystem. In 2000, the band purchased a recording studio in North Hollywood. After making some renovations and bringing in their own equipment, they renamed it "The Hive" (which is also the name of their fanclub). The studio was active in the 70's / 80's. Missing Persons and Adam Ant recorded albums there and most recently it was used as a voice over studio for movies, etc. The band jumped to Volcano for From Chaos, which appeared in summer 2001, and followed that with Evolver two years later. By now 311 had been together over ten years, and they celebrated with a Greatest Hits comp. Released in July 2004, it included all of their hit singles, a few new tracks, and the band's gracefully-reggaeing cover of the Cure's "Love Song," originally from the soundtrack to Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore's 50 First Dates. Nick Hexum also produced four other songs for the movie's soundtrack including songs with Seal, Jason Mraz and Dryden Mitchell from Alien Ant Farm.
On 3-11-04, 311 fans once again invaded the city of New Orleans for a special 3-11 Day Concert. 311 performed a legendary 5 hour set at UNO Lakefront Arena in front of a sold-out crowd of 311's biggest fans. The band played 68 songs including all their classic hits plus rarities and covers (Led Zeppelin's "D'yer Maker", The Clash's "White Man in Hammersmith Palais", The Cure's "Love Song"). The entire concert was filmed and recorded and ultimately released (Oct 26, 2004) as a special 2-DVD set"3-11 Day Live in New Orleans." The DVD includes 64 songs plus a behind the scenes look at the band and their fans.
311 came back with new material in August 2005 with the Don't Tread on Me LP. In the summer of 2006, 311 went on tour once again. They had opening acts from Pepper and Bob Marley's legendary band, The Wailers. It was a summer of rock and reggae music. After thier tour was over, 311 decided to take a well-deserved break, but that didn't stop them from their career in music. They laid down a cover of the Toots and Maytal's "Reggae Got Soul" which will be featured on the soundtrack for Surf's Up, which will be in theater in the summer of '07. Meanwhile, Nick Hexum is ran his second marathon for his non-profit organization, Liberal Hexum. Also, the bassist P-Nut has a side project with a band called Hollow Follows. The experiences don't have to stop. 311 have been recording. On 311 day ’07, Nick announced on the 311 BB that they were creating a new song titled, “I Was Wrong”. This new song is a combination of dancehall reggae with funk. 311's always comes original and will continue in due time.
In more recent events, 3-11 day has come and gone again, as Nick said "This is paradise for us." The 2008 Summer Unity Tour came to it's end. Now, 311 has hit the studio with producer Bob Rock and have completed half of thier upcoming ninth studio album , which is still unnamed. It is expected to be released in early 09. The journey continues!!

My Interests

Before 311, Nick worked as a waiter.

In his highschool days, Nick played in several local Omaha bands such as "The Ed's," "The Right Profile," and "Unity." In the late 1980's, Nick moved to LA to pursue a musical career. Later he moved back to Omaha, when 311 as a band was formed. 311 began playing together in 1989. In 1990, Nick realized the only way for 311 to gain notoriety was to release albums, so Nick started his own record company called "What Have You Records" and used it to begin releasing 311 titles. The band released three albums, Dammit!, Unity, and Hydroponic, as well as one EP, Downstairs EP, before signing to Capricorn Records in 1992. 311 is still rolling on with success to this day and show no signs of stopping.

Along with his band, Nick has several side-projects. Ginsing Clothing is his clothes line that was started in 2004. Also, he has his own beautiful island in the Flordia Keys called Melody Key, which you can rent at more affordable rates. Nick created a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting various environmental and social causes called Liberal Hexum. He has ran in two marathons to support this cause so far. It's main focus seems to be global warming. He also uses What Have You Records to produce albums for various other artists, such as Pepper and Zack Hexum.

Before 311, SA worked as a roofer and paper boy.

He is of Latino descent. Martinez's nickname is partially a play on the Spanish slang term "ese", meaning "buddy" or "friend." It is also said that Doug had an "out-of-body experience and S.A. is an acronym for "Spooky Apparition." SA uses many allusions to alien life and galactic imagery, which explains why his lyrics often sound like they were written by an alien. SA is an excellent writer and poet. Over the years, he has given a large dose of Sample-Effects to many of the band's old songs, which gives the songs a whole new sound in concert. SA's harmonic voice always sounds good, and his and Nick's "Back-up Singing" of each other really gives another dimension to each song.

Martinez was born and raised in Omaha. When his friends started a band he began making guests appearences with the band as a vocalist. After two years of doing this Martinez was asked to join the band, 311 as we know it today was born.

Before 311, Chad worked in a musical instruments store.

He is noted as a very successful and talented drummer, and is probably best known for his drum solo on the song "Applied Science", which is often played much longer in live shows, notably on 311's Live! album. During more recent shows, the entire band joins in the "solo," by playing larger drums and cymbals brought out for that song only. This part of the show has been known to last up to five or more minutes by itself. Prior to joining the band he drummed with the Sky Ryders drum corps in Hutchinson, Kansas and the Railmen drum corps in Omaha, Nebraska. Chad is sponsored by the custom drum company, Orange County Drum and Percussion. In 2006, he opened Chad Sexton's Drum City
, a music store in North Hollywood, California that specializes in gear, tour supplies, drum lessons, repairs and sales. Sexton has also mixed records for up-and-coming bands such as The Rivalry, Agents Of The Sun, and rap-rock veterans Shootyz Groove.

Before 311, P-nut worked as a dish-washer (for a week or ten days.)

Aaron was given the nickname "P-Nut" by his friends who thought Aaron's head was shaped like a peanut. He is the youngest member of the band. He is the son of an Air Force chaplain. P-Nut is famous for his "funk-slap" style of playing the bass. He also played violin before the bass guitar. P-Nut is also a strong supporter of the Los Angeles Lakers, often wearing their jerseys while playing shows. He typically plays on Warwick 5 String bass guitars. Through an SWR Rig, including 2 custom Megoliath 8x10's with the 311 emblem. P-Nut now has his own Warwick Signature Bass out. Customized Warwick Stage II Streamer. P-Nut is creative adding his own flavor to several 311 tracks. He now has a side-project playing bass in a band called Hollow's Follow

Before 311, Tim worked in a record store.

Tim Mahoney wasn't the first guitarist for 311. Originally, Jim Watson played guitar, but whenever he couldn't continue with the band. Mahoney took over. Since 1993, TIm exclusively plays PRS guitars. His favorite is a late 90's model fully-customized Standard 24 (24-fret) which he affectionately calls "Blue" His effects have changed a lot throughout the years but there have been a few that have grown to be more commonly used on 311's newer albums. His new staple effect, the Mutron III Envelope Filter combined with Electro-Harmonix' Deluxe Memory Man Delay has given him a sound very smiliar to one of his guitar heroes Jerry Garcia. Tim has spent many years searching for his favorite sounds as well as blending the things he liked about the guitar players he enjoyed listening to when he was a kid. Tim is known to sign autographs for people backwards and even his guitar picks have his near trade mark signature of "miT". He is also known to draw a flower in his hand when signing his picture.

The Fans Session

This is where I'm going to dedicate a portion of the page to the fans. Any pictures you have with the band, of your 311 tattoo, or anything else 311 related that you'd like to share, feel free to message me. And if you'd like me to put a quote and/or your name underneath, let me know. I will be using some of the same ones that I had on my other page, and I can't remember who sent them in. If they're yours, please let me know. Or is there something you'd just like to say about 311 or an expierence at a concert or anything like that? I'd like to hear from you as well. To start this off...

Concert Expierences
Alright. Wow... I thought I was a hardcore fan, but there was new-found appreciation for the band whenever I saw them live. It was fantastic!! I went to the STL show this summer for my first 311 show. I was fortunate and got seats about 10 rows behind the pit. Fairly close, very awesome seats. Fiction Plane was alright. Musically, they were right there, but lyrically... come on, fellas. "Put on your shoes and let's go out. Put on your shoes and let's go out, put on your shoes... and let's go out." Snoop Dogg as alright for his style of music, but it's simply not my type of music. My buddies who went with me called him Beyond Profane, but that's what I expected from Snoop Dogg. Needless to say, when 311 took the stage I was just in awe through the rest of the show. The new intro was fairly cool. I wasn't sure what to think when I heard they did the Good, Bad, and Ugly theme for an intro, but it worked well. The rest of the show was simply phemoninal. I know many complain about the setlist this tour, about how they seemed to be playing thier greatest hits. But anything they played was a new expierence for me and I throughly enjoyed it. I've never felt an energy quite like a 311 show. Best concert that I've been to so far. Wow... Still in shock and awe. And there will be many, many more shows to come!!

I just wanted to share my exciting evening with everyone!! Chris and I went to the 311 concert last night..and it was freaking AMAZING!!!! The crowd was more in tune than I've ever seen them. It was just a beautiful vibe. I was disappointed to see we couldn't bring our camera inside, but that ended up not mattering. My wonderful husband bought me the 2 new tank tops they had (not to mention a couple drinks.:o) After the show we went with some friends who were going to wait by the buses. We waited and waited and didn't know if they had all come out or not. Well...none other than Nick Hexum comes out and takes the time to sign autographs and pose for pics (so gracious..he had to be butt-tired after that show and all the others they do every night...so awesome of him!)..and, yup, I was one of the lucky ones..again thanks to Chris!!! I've been wanting to meet any and all of 311 forever..they are such an intricate part of our lives! What a wonderful night!!!!

Love to everyone!
Jen
p.s. Yes, it was raining, which is why I look a bit like a drowned rat..LOL! But soooo worth it!

September 2nd 2006 311 show, Dallas, Texas, Smirnoff Music Center. It all began at home, as me and my 311 buddy are making our 311 shirts, and rolling our 311 joints. We rolled a total of 6 joints, the Wailers were there so.. anyway, we go to the show, it's kick ass, as to be expected. The show ends, w/o Who's Got The Herb, or Hydroponic, so we had no chance to hand our man p-nut this stellar joint we rolled especially for him. So we stay next to the stage trying to get a crew member to deliver this special joint, no go, for some reason, this dork to the left of me knocks the joint from my grasp, falling to the floor where security guards were posted. So by now, I'm obviously distraught, and to compensate for my dismay, this angel roadie hands me the set list, and now it is proudly displayed, and framed, above my bar for everyone to see. -Jennifer Blankenship Dallas, TEXAS- NOLA bound.

311 day 04 was the single greatest concert of my life. Spent all day tailgating and hanging out with other fans waiting for floor wrist bands. It's awesome when you like a band this much and get to meet and hang out with other fans that are just as hard core. It was a great day even before the concert. The show was insane. 5+ plus hours of solid 311 - no opener. The band took 1 break and was off stage for MAYBE 15 minutes - just long enough to take a piss and change clothes and then came out to continue rocking with a 2nd set. They played damn near 70 songs which means you know they had some rare classics in the mix.No other band in the world does it like this. The positive energy felt from the band and the fans is absolutely crazy. They're so greatful for such a dedicated fan base and the fans are so greatful for an enormous concert and all that 311's music has brought us.2006 was fun in Memphis (great town) but I don't think I'll ever have another concert experience like 2004. I'm hooked for life and plan to be at every 311 day show in the future. For those of you who have never been to New Orleans... hold on to your butts... the town is pure party. I can't wait for this years show! A larger arena means more fans and more celebration and more positive vibes. I'm smiling just thinking about it. See you at the show...

**UMM, OK, this show was SICK!!! first of all i have one word for you.....SALSA!!! I couldn't believe it. really rare and obscure for them to play and the crowd loved every minute of it. Grassroots is my second fav album of theirs and they rep'd it well. i have seen the boys now into the double digits (amount of shows) and over the course of 10 years and it just gets better every time, I swear to GOD, the next time they come around, I am meeting them. jesus, they aren't getting any younger and I fear I will miss my chance to meet my "friends". The vibes were flowing for the most part. One meathead in the pit started a fight, but the dudes around me broke it up. The pit was PACKED. I am in the pit every year (thanks to presale and this year a very generous friend-lindsey piper!!) and I have never seen it so full and so kickin. This show ranks in at probably 3 in terms of playlists-i would say in my opinion...first is obviously 311 day 2006 and then second was at avalon (because the venue is so intimate) waaaaayyy back at the wbcn christmas party thingy they had like 6 years ago...that was awesome, tantric played and i forget who else, but the crowd was no way near being crowded...ahh.
the show was brilliant and even matisyahu was great...he came out and sang with the boys to "love song" and during his set, brought a little kid up on stage with him (seriously like 2 yrs old with HUGE head phones-so hopefully the kid isn't deaf now).
so all in all, besides the crap in the parking lot, i had a great time and everything just went away as soon as 311 hit the stage. I want to start a campaign for them to play their summer show at fleet boston pavillion (like they did a few years back) it's a nicer venue and it would eliminate a lot of the crap that happens in the parking lot. Do you think this is possible lol? anyways, the setlist is below! i'm counting down the days til' 311day 2008!!!! woot woot

****oh one really funny note to mention, during applied science drum solo, PNUT flung his drum stick by accident over by Nick and ran and picked it up laughing hysterically!!! loved it!****

hello fellow 311 til we die-ers!! i've been to all of the 311 day festivities thus far and can't wait for the next, especially since its back in new orleans! obviously the shows are amazing and can't really pick many favorites cuz they are all great!! i guess being in new orleans is one of the great parts of the show! its such a fun town and my favorite place to visit!! good partying for sure! as for the shows, just being there with all the 311 fans and knowing they're only there for 311!! the dedication to the fans from 311 is by far the most special thing i think a band can do. one of my best memories comes from the 04 show mostly because i was on the dvd and i can enjoy that the rest of my life and show my kids, that i rocked out when i was younger!! haha! another fun thing about the show is the amazing people that i have met throughout the years at various 311 shows and seeing them again at different shows! O, one more had to be seeing D'yer Ma'ker live!!! the mighty Zep rocks! peace and unity!!!

YES! New Orleans 2002, check. New Orleans 2004, check. Memphis 2006, check. Back in New Orleans for 2008, check!! (well, Saturday I hope, I was an unlucky one on Monday)The first 311 Day I went to in 02 was the most amazing thing I've seen up until that point. Previous to that I had seen 311 a few times live here in Dallas, and wow, as I'm sure everyone knows, a 311 show is the greatest show period, regardless of where it's at. I saw the footage from 311 Day 2000 in New Orleans on the ETSD 2 DVD and I hear Nick say backstage to the camera, "Yo, 47 songs, here we go..." and the rest is history. I heard about tix going on sale for 311 Day 2002, and bought em as soon as they went on sale. After the show, I said to myself, I would never miss another 311 Day show, and guess what, I haven't. Every one I've been to I meet the coolest, chillest, most down to earth, genuine, and friendly people on the planet, hardcore 311 fans!! I wouldn't just recommend it to other 311 fans, I would say that you must experience at least once! You can feel the entire arena alive with electricity even before the lights drop, and once they do.....Oh my god. 04 was even better. Memphis, better still. This will be the greatest to date!! Yeah, I'm just a bit excited. It's been a long 4 years since we last got to rock NOLA's ass!! Hope to meet all of you there!! Royal St. Charles is where I'll be!
Dan

WOW! Its amazin how u guyz still do it with all that energy in ya!!! 50 shows!! awesome!. Well let me just say ive been with u guyz all these years and am lookin forward to reachin my 50th show next year (gonna pic somewhere special) or maybe jus keep it in my home city (Boston), but for this tour the best show was the show i neva got to C!!!! I got arrested for being tooo drunk at the New Hampshire and I wanted to die when I saw the setlist!!! I cant believe i missed the golden opportunity to hear CREATURE FEATURE!!!. An wanted to hear Borders as well! Plus my fav. tune to always hear TRANSISTOR! So needless to say, I usually neva get drunk at ur shows cuz i want to remeber everything, but i guess that the price I had to pay. Anywho u guyz made it worth while at the Boston show, where i brought one of my buddies and garaunteed him it was gonna b in his top ten. He didnt think so, but even before the show i told him i bet its gonna b in his top 3 favorite shows, it ended up being his 2nd fav. only fallin behind to Tom Petty! Not bad 4 a classic rock listener. I neva want u guyz to end. I hope u continue this journey for as long as u guyz can possibly do it! Wheneva u guyz are out tourin, u can bet im planning some road trip to get in as many shows as I possibly can. like u guyz say "Can't nobody do it like 311, Fuckin up competition cuz their really is none"!!! So true, so true. Lookin foreward to what others have to say about their show experiences. Oh by the way, my new fav. live "wake your mind up" INSANE! well gotta go! 311-4-life

And the Fans Say...
Just sitting here by myself, the perfect opportunity to throw in the 311 day DVD from '04 in New Orleans. Just chillin listening to my fave band ever!!! Even though Im alone (exept for my lovely birdie) I started thinking...

Thinkin' about 311. Im so lucky to have such an influence in my life. Why doesnt every single person in the world know the pleasure that is 311? I feel sorry for those who dont understand. I have liked many bands throughout my life.. but none have had such an impact on me like 311. What is it about these 5 men? They are magnetic, unique, original. They arent just our fave singers.. they are our mentors, our brothers and most importantly they are like our friends.

It has been 12 years since I first started listening. I have never met them (although I have tried ;) and they do not even know I exist. Yet they have helped me to exist. When you hear a song, its not just "Oh my god! I LOVE this song!!" Its more than that.. it is an experience. Why is that? I dont know. All I know is that in that moment, you feel like they wrote that line or the whole damn song JUST for your ears. To match what you needed to hear at that time to help you through a hard time, or to empasize a grea tme! I cant explain. I could bumble on forever. I guess all I can say is thanks to 311 and I cant imagine life without them! Sound crazy or lame? Not if you are a 311 fan. If not, Im sorry for you. I know there are lots of you out there like me. I have met some and talked to many!

So lets toast to our bros:

"S.A, Nick, miT, PNut and Chad- To years of bliss and many more to come. You five men have had such a positive impact on thousands of people, probably more than you ever thought possible. Thanks for helping us through our darkest moments and always being there through the best!!!! WE LOVE 311!!!!!!!" -- Erin Noel

Hi,
My name is Kathleen and my oldest son, Ed, was THE 311 fan. He just loved their music.... On Jan. 13, 2007, I lost Ed in a tragic car/pedestrian accident. He was 18 for just 6 days. Now I find myself playing and really getting into 311's music. A very good friend of his got up at the service at the funeral home and sang 'Amber'. He said that it was one of Ed's favorite songs. It was the most awesome tribute to him. When I needed Ed to take me somewhere, I would ask him to put that song on all the time. He had one of those car stereos that was so loud my insides would vibrate! And you could hear him coming from down the street. lol He loved to listen to 311 in his car. He also did many drawings of the 311 logo. He even made one, 3-d, at school with some computer program...It is one of my treasures.
Now I am listening and loving their talent.
I guess I don't really know why I am posting this note, except that Ed loved their music so much, I just wanted to tell someone who would understand I guess.
I love my son so very much. I miss him terribly.
I will continue to be a 311 fan in his place.

Thanks for taking the time to read this little bit for my Edward.
Kathleen....
("Mams" as Ed would call me......)

311 Poetry:

Tribute To 311

Three Eleven...
Created with a mindstate unknown to most men
Nick Hexum declared the god of the pen.
To script a song so powerful in a divine blend
How many men you know can tip a word on end
And pour out it's meaning and cause it's effect to ascend

And then, Mr. Martinez, as he steps to the mic
Sparks a touch to ignite energy leaving minds in a psyche
Because he 'wants to be free' and he 'wants to do right'
Yet he still holds the talent to cause words unified

As Tim Mahoney picks up his music-making tool
Master of manipulation spinning notes like a whirlpool
With many advances of solos that cause trances
Releasing hypnotizing melodys to make Hendrix look like a fool

Chad Sexton sits relaxed hovering over his set
Innovating beats themself to be heard from US to Tibet
Whenever I get upset I just drop down to Applied Science
To calm my nerves I set the mood to Sexton and give him my reliance

True, last but never forgotten is my man Aaron Wills
Dropping basslines like bombs giving my spine a case of chills
The 311 sound could and would never be as enlightening
Without having the infamous words spoken of 'P-Nut beat that thing!'

Anyway, 311, I would like to thank you
Nick, P-Nut, Tim, Aaron, SA and the rest of the crew
As I say this I believe I speak for your entire fan base
Thanks for makin music, stayin positive and true.

Logic

The beats overwhelm me as my heart begins to ache, The soothing rigid sounds of the music begin to make me shake, The words that come from one's mouth, the words that are spoken, Are the words from one's mind, words that will never be broken, The logic of this feeling that overpowers peoples mind's and souls, Makes us convulse in a way that has no control, The heavy words that I take in release all tension that surrounds me, And it captures my heart that shatters all hate that I may see, If only I could feel this power all moments, only if I could hear it, May all that hear those lyrics openly listen to this, The deepness of the music has a dizzying effect in my eyes, Is the effect that will bring one more mind to be stabilized, I shutter when I hear the harmony that breaks fear, The heaviness of their words bring me near... They open their minds to us to show us the logic of what we call life, So that we can push back that life given strife.

An Ode To The Best

From the moment the melodies hit my ears, I knew that this was love.
The funky guitar and the screamin bass played magically,
As if God had sent them to me from above.
The super phat beats from the drumset were played,
While the talented voices left everyone in shock.
This incredible music hypnotized us all,
And soon all of their albums were sold out of stock.
Addicting music was heard all over the world,
We worshipped Sexton, Martinez, Hexum, Mahoney and Wills.
Their tunes were so amazing,
Every fan listened to them and got chills.
And still today, 311 is going strong,
Nothing can stop them now.
Positivity, Unity, and love is their style.
Nick, SA, Pnut, Tim, and Chad,
Stand up and take your bow...
I Love You 311,
Amanda

Sound: This is 311 as everyone knows it. A little rap, reggae, funk and rock all put together in a great package. Initially I was a little hesitant to listen to the album because of its punk appearance but I couldnt ahve been more wrong. This album was very upbeat and is best when listening in the car on the way to work. The music is just simply great.

Lyrics: The lyrics take a while to decipher what with all the metaphors and such but it all makes sense after awhile.

Impression: In my opinion this is the most basic 311 that I know of and thats a great thing. In my opinion this is a great album for anyone who's never listened to 311 before and wants to start. You won't be disappointed.

Grassroots (1994)
*Lucky
*Homebrew
*8:16 AM

Sound: 311 is a very talented and amazing band. They combine sounds of rap-rock, funk-rock, and reggea and do it good too. Their bassist P-nut, can really lay down a groove and can slap like a beast. Tim Mahoney, Their guitarist, is really talented, and can throw down an awesome solo. Their drummer really makes the songs awesome. His Beats make the song, and he even has a drum solo in the song Applied Science. This album really shows the talent of all the members in 311. P-nut has some really cool slap basslines, and has an amazing bass solo in the song nutsymtom. Tim Mahoney has some really cool guitar riffs in songs like homebrew, Salsa, and Grassroots, and can has a really clean sounding solos in songs like nutymtom and grassroots. Chad Sexton, the drummer, has really amazing beats. His solo in Applied Science really shows his talent as a drummer.

Lyrics: 311 has two singers. Nick Hexum who sings in a sort of rap like way, and their rapper SA. Their songs really have a peacefull meaning to them, and in some songs are about weed which is cool in my opinion. The structure the lyrics are are sort of like something you would see if you read rap lyrics, although 311 does them much better and "raps" about life and not booty. Both singers are very talented. SA has a pretty high voice and raps pretty damn fast, but his vocals are really good. Nick is the one who really sings. His singing abilitie is really good, and the lyrics he write are really good and poetic like.

Impression: This is a must have album for any 311 fan, and I would defiantly recommend this to someone who is just getting into 311. Songs that are most impressive are homebrew, nutsymtom, 8:16 A.M, Omaha stylee, Applied Science, Grassroots, and Salsa. They really made this album really good and it really show the talent of everyone in the band. I love how 311 combines so much styles into their songs. There is really nothing to hate about this album and 311 in general. Go out and buy this album, you will not be dissappointed with it.

Blue Album -- 311 (1995)
*Don't Stay Home
*Down
* All Mixed Up

Sound: 311's sound is impressive. When you think Rap Metal, not only do you think "talk about two opposite sides of the music world", you probably envison bands like Limp Bizkit or Korn (or maybe even Papa Roach). However, this ablum can completely change the way you view rap metal forever. The group's refreshing guitar that can be heavy and serene at the same time, just as it can rock out loud and still relax you to sleep all in one song. The every song is beautiful, and this album proves just how influential 311 was to some of the most promising bands today.

Lyrics: Nick Hexum and "SA" Martinez lay down some fresh beats that only they know how to do. A classic album, in terms of it's lyrics, which boasted the #1 Hit "Down", "All Mixed Up", and "Don't Stay Home", as well as multiple songs that could have easily gained radio play ("Sweet", "Guns (Are For Pussies)", and "Misdirected Hostility").

Impression: This is 311's most successful album, reaching triple platinum, and displays 311's true musical genius. Their influences are numerous and well spread. 311 developed a sound unlike anything at the time. Simply put, bands like Incubus would not exist today if 311 hadn't paved the way (hey, that rhymed).

Transistor (1997)
*Transistor
*Prisoner
*Beautiful Disaster

Sound: On Transistor, 311 take their ability to write a good song, up a notch, making 21 songs that are all capable of being radio hits. This disc is a rich blend of rap-metal, reggae, hard rock, and has really good solos (Use Of Time and What Was I Thinking). Their ability to adapt to various music styles is very evident in this disc.

Lyrics: Though the lyrics are sometimes space related,(Galaxy, Light Years, Jupiter) they are really creative. They are very talented musicians/song and lyric writers and are underrated as a group.

Impression: This disc compares to no other I have heard. I love this cd because all of the songs are actually songs and not stupid filler tracks (no names please). The most impressive songs on this album are "Beautiful Disaster", "Prisoner", "Use Of Time", and "Stealing Happy Hours". I love all of the differences you notice between the songs, one has an impressive guitar lick, but another has a good chord-progression to it. If this cd were lost or stolen I would be really pissed, and I would buy it again. Its worth the money.

Live! (1998)

Simply excellent. The track selection for this particular show was smart on the bands part and to me sounds like a great set in itself. With some of the best tracks from Music, Grassroots, Transistor, and Blue on this album, you know that what you are going to hear is fun to listen to and is something that you can really jam with. The live factor of this album just ups the ante on the songs, which are heard. Like I have said before, some of the best 311 songs got even better thanks to 311's outstanding ability to play amazing live. I think that it's rare for you to find a live album with perfect sound quality. 311 does an excellent job in duplicating the exact energy that they have in their music and transforming that into a great sounding show and in some cases, making the music better than it was.

Omaha Sessions (1998)

It was not the 1995 self-entitled release that marked the birth of 311, although many think this. In fact, their first major label debut was 1993’s “Music” on Capricorn Records. But even before this, there were a collection of local releases that dominated Omaha, Nebraska where the band first began making music. Their first three albums released on Nick Hexum’s own: “What Have You Records” proved to be a hit in Omaha as well as with word of mouth. Unity, Dammit, and Hydroponic were the humble beginnings of this band that later broke into the industry and later found their spot with their smash-hit single, “Down.” Released exclusively at the band’s website and live shows, “Omaha Sessions” is a re-mastered collection of some of the songs that were made way back when and never saw release on their major label debut. Though it displays a slightly different sound than the band has now, it’s still their roots and the signature 311 sound is still present.

Soundsystem (1999)
*Come Original
*Flowing
*Large In The Margin

Sound: 311 has always been a ban with several different styles working together to come up with a sound which is not seen anywhere else. On this album everyone is performing at the best they ever have, and the harmonies are incredible. One extrodinary fact about this album is the bass work by P-Nut. This is probably some of the best bass work he has ever done. A latin theme is very proficient after the 5th track (cant fade me), and it is just one of the several extrordinary things that make this a good album. One song which really stands out is Sever. While the lyrics seem smple, they really have a lot of hidden meaning while still having the traditional upbeat sound. all in all, this is defanetly the best 311 record in terms of sound.

Lyrics: 311 always have incredible thoughtfull lyrics which inspire countless hours of thought. This album is no different, with songs like "Large In The Margin" and "Flowing". These two tracks, along with "Eons" are the lyrical highlights of the piece, and the other tracks are no fillers either. As always, nick hexum's voice shines like the fury of 1000 suns, and the interplay and harmonizing with SA martinez make this album a lyrical delight

Impression: All in all, this is defenatley the best 311 record. It combines just the right ammounts of funk, metal, rock, and latin rythms to form a masterpeace which has not been seen since. the most impressive songs are defenatley "Flowing," "Eons," "Life's Not A Race" and "Sever", all of which contain the right ammount of incredible lyricwork, as well as rythms. All in all, a great buy, defanetly go pick it up, and your ears will thank you.

From Chaos (2001)
*You Wouldn't Believe
*Amber
*I'll Be Here A While

Sound: With so many acts crowding the funk-rap-metal combo that 311 has been working for the past decade, now is the time for the band to crack the mold and take the genre in a new direction. What I found was an eclectic mixture of great songs that I just loved. Just about every song on this CD is fun to listen to. One of the best aspects of "From Chaos" is that it is well-balanced. The first half of the CD is more hard rock than the second half. Starting with "Champagne" it starts to get more low-key and beautiful. It also has 311's high energy trademark rock sound throughout. Its a good listen start to finish.

Lyrics: The lyrics were still at the top of their game. From he rock songs like Uncalm to the melodic Amber, Hexum's voice flowed smoothly. Martinez's raps were also nicely done, but he also sang a bit as in Champagne. All around it was wonderfully done.

'From Chaos' showcased a much more focused and semi-creative side of 311 that stylistically is on-par with 'Grassroots' but with a perfect and solid recording and production. Highlights are as such:The heavier punk/rap fusion star here would have to be "Sick Tight", and the laid back reggae/acoustic rock fusion star in my opinion (many people loved Amber, and it is a good song) is "I'll Be Here A While".

Evolver (2003)
*Creatures (For A While)
*Beyond The Gray Sky

Sound: First of all, I'd like to say that 311 is a great band and I recommend you all check them out.I find that this album covers new ground for the band. There is acoustic parts on a couple of songs, which I like. There is also alot less of a rap side to this album which I feel is good too as it provides kind of a fresh feel. There is however, a lot less reggae than in past albums.

Lyrics: The lyrics are pretty good but different I would have to say. One song that stuck out was Beyond The Grey Sky, it's a ballad that's about Nick's friend who took his own life, I wouldn't think he would write lyrics about that, it's great though. Also there are a bunch of songs about girls and all that, it's real different for 311.

Impression: The album flows well but is fairly short. The order in which the songs are tracked is good and has a good rhythm to it. The production I feel is excellent. In addition, the cd is enhanced and the special features off a behind the scenes look at shooting the album cover and making the album. So as you can see there is trade-offs good and bad for the new album. I personally am kind of 'if-y' about 3-4 of the songs right now but all there albums have grown on me over time and I'm sure this one will to.

Greatest Hits '93-'03
*Love Song
*First Staw

From the chunkheaded rap-rock beta tests "Down" and "All Mixed Up" through the blue-eyed make-out reggae of "Amber" and on to latter-day stuff like the underrated Soundsystem single "Come Original," 311 spanned the nascence and ultimate codification of the alternative nation. "F*ck the naysayers 'cause they don't mean a thing!" -- if you went to college in the 1990s, 311 was on your radar. Greatest Hits '93-'03 remasters the highlights from those years, includes the Omaha group's graceful cover of the Cure's "Love Song," and pads the set with two new songs. As for the unreleased material, "First Straw" is a pleasant enough reggae-rock jam of the variety S.A., Nick Hexum, et al., have grown skilled -- if not necessarily better -- at writing, while "How Do You Feel" is a muscular rocker with the usual eager rap/triumphant chorus dynamic. Other highlights include a version of Grassroots opener "Homebrew" remixed for added punch and grit, and the diametrically opposed Evolver cuts "Creatures (For a While)" and "Beyond the Gray Sky." While "Do You Right" is the only representative from 1993's Music, it's nice to remember that it sounds like Fishbone playing Love. In short, Greatest Hits '93-'03 is the perfect time capsule for the casual 311 fan.

Don't Tread On Me (2005)
*Don't Tread On Me
*Speak Easy
*Frolic Room

Sound: In terms of production and overall sound, this album sounds more or less like the next step in evolution from From Chaos and Evolver. It's Saint and 311 paired up again, so no surprise there. There aren't quite as many overdubs and production flourishes, but other than that it's more of the same. In terms of the actual music, however, there's a bit of a directional shift from their previous two albums. Nick Hexum delivered on his promise to bring the "funky reggae" rather than the smooth Amber-style reggae and rap-rock of the previous releases. Even the rock songs are more upbeat than usual so the whole album flows nicely(although transitioning from Solar Flare to Waiting was a bit extreme). The songwriting is quite possibly the best it's ever been: out of nowhere, SA has come out as a great songwriter. In fact, his songs are highlights of the album. He's taken a bit of the pressure off of Nick, and it shows.

Lyrics: They lyrics on this song live up to 311's typical excellence. I've always really appreciated the combination of writing styles from both Hexom and Martinez, and this album is no different. I listened to this album probably a dozen times or so within the first couple weeks of owning it, and that was months ago, but I could call up the lyrics to most songs without having to think too much. They are catchy, interesting, and intelligent. The lyrics also speak of they're maturation over the years. Many of the songs are about simply appreciating life, love, and what you've found. These songs wont blow your mind or break out ideas that have never before been processed by the human mind, but they speak simple truths that I think many of us have forgotten. Even if you are one who doesn't care about lyrics in the smallest way, the melodies behind the lyrics will probably have you singing them to yourself a day or two after.

mpression: My overall impression of the album is pretty high. I'd say it's at least on par with they're previous albums, but as aforementioned, is a very new sound for 311 in comparison. Some notable songs in my opinion would be the title track, Don't Tread on Me, Waiting, and It's Getting OK Now. Don't Tread on Me (which you've probably heard on the radio) seems to pull back to some of 311'a older more melodic songs. It combines some smooth roots with the infamous ska groove, to yield an overall great song. Waiting definately displays some of Martinez's seemingly new found vocal talents as well as the maturity the band has found. It's getting okay now is a more guitar driven track, with some pretty cool riffs. They combine the regular power chords with a tonne of runs up and down scales that are smooth, in my opinion, they probably make the song. Overall, I can't say there is a track on this album I don't like, and I'm very curious to see what further releases sounds like.

Enlarged To Show Detail (1996)

First off...words can't even begin to explain how awesome this DVD was. I mean i know it is just a "..ary" type movie but if you actually start to watch it--it grows into more than that. You begin to love the band even if you didn't like them before. The movie contains mainly concert footage and interviews with the band. But added on are some truly HILARIOUS moments that were recorded on tour from the band using just a home-camera. These guys are not like any other band. This movie shows people how 311 manages to keep it serious with their music--but at the exact same time, screw off and have the times of their lives. It's not just all about music to these guys. Its about music and having a good time. Even during the interviews they get crazy and say things that are funny--even if they arn't supposed to be funny. The DVD extras contain 4 music videos for "Down", "Don't Stay Home", "Homebrew", and "All Mixed Up". It also has a trailer for 311's "Enlarged To Show Detail 2" home video, and comes with a bonus CD with 4 unreleased tracks.311's "Enlarged To Show Detail" is something you can't pass up. If your a hardcore 311 fan, like myself, you can't live without this. And if you are not a huge fan or even a fan at all, you will still enjoy this movie. The movie runs for about an hour. It does have a parental advisory on it and is not for kids. It contains explicit language throughout and has extremely explicit drug content.

Enlarge To Show Detail 2 (2001)

311's "Enlarged To Show Detail 2" is just awesome. It contains so much more than the first one and has a lot more concert footage. The movie this time around is not about them being interviewed as much as the first. This time it's more about their "From Chaos" tour (which I attended and loved) and it contains many more hilarious behind-the-scenes home-movies made while touring. Some of the highlights are each band member's personal scene, Japan, 311-Day, and of course the 311 Milk Challenge which is the funniest thing I've seen in a long time.

Some other things that are in the movie are footage from 311's "Hive", Halloween shows, Old School footage from when they first started out, some brief interviews with the band, the summer Weenie-Roast featuring a guest appearance by Shaq to sing the unreleased song "Psycho", and some other awesome things. The DVD contains even more music videos than the first. It has videos for "Transistor", "Prisoner", "Beautiful Disaster", "Come Original", "Flowing", "You Wouldn't Believe", and "I'll Be Here Awhile (Director's Cut). It also contains "Making The Video" episodes for "Flowing" and "You Wouldn't Believe". It also has a trailer for ETSD 1 and comes with a new bonus CD with more unreleased tracks. A must buy for any 311 fan. The movie runs for about 1 hour and 30 minutes. This one too has a parental advisory and is somewhat worse than the first. It contains explicit language, explicit drug content, and some sexual-humor. The milk challenge is also not reccomended for the weak stomachs.
