With a college degree and an upbringing in the hard Bronx streets, J-$tash is the BangOut version of the best of both worlds. Growing up in the Claremont Section of the Bronx J-$tash was faced with many obstacles as a teen. “I was someone who enjoyed school; Shit I like learning new things. I was one of those students teachers always said was bright but could not behave. I still can’t behave.†That was not the only problem that J-$tash was faced with. “I grew up with my grandmother; she is the love of my life. My mom’s had a drug addiction and my pops wasn’t there. My grandmother had the desire to give me and my little sister the best, but money was always tight for us. I grew up feeling like I was creating a burden on her, so from a young age I internalized that I had to get this money, man-up, do for me so she could do more for herself.†“Grandma Tried To Provide/Teach Us The Right Way/But I Had a Dream/With Them Fiends/And Them White Things/ I Like Things/Nice Things/Very High Price Things/9 to 5 Couldn’t Get That/Struggle To Survive/Wasn’t With That/Stayed In School/Ain’t No Fool/After School/Act The Fool/Strap The Tool/It’s Packs To Move/Pass The Booze/Light The Dro/F*ck The Law/Cause The Truth Of It All/Is I’d Rather Live Right/Than To Live Righteous….†That verse symbolizes what J-$tash has come to represent. “I make music for all. I went to school, I can relate to the things people go through as students, especially the ones from the hood, that feel they don’t fit in with the school crowd. I also have done all there is in the hood to do. My G-pass is stamped 10 times over. So when I make music, I make music for those who know who they are, who are confident in themselves and what they are doing. I sold drugs at a point in my life, but I make music for someone who may not know and understand that world, as well as for those who live it. I know what I have lived, seen, and heard, that is the basis for my music.†“I still believe that somewhere out there good music still beats politics. I think the people out there are craving a return to the normal. Somewhere along the line music took a backseat to politics, talent a backseat to business. I like to believe that I am one of those people who doesn’t have to compromise who he is as a person to be embraced by the public. My music reflects reality; it goes to through different feeling thoughts and moods, as we all do as people.†2008 seems to be the year the world will finally find out what J has in the $tash.
