About Me

From a local Edmonton independant newspaper: "Completely surrounded by art before he could even stand, Steve took to playing and creating music while just a child. After playing numerous instruments in his childhood, he eventually found his love for music buried deep within the sounds of the electric guitar. Growing up with a diverse range of musical tastes and inspirations, Steve developed an intimate connection with the blues, which inspired his venture into other musical areas, namely jazz and soul. Using this connection, he crafted a highly soulful and emotional style of playing with feel that rivals even the sickest of todays jazz and blues musicians. While having chops that would rival any of the best shredders, Steve prefers to concentrate his efforts on sounding relaxed and soulful. In order to intensify his knowledge of the instrument, Steve left half way through a religious studies degree in order to pursue his love for making music; enrolling in the Grant Macewan Music Program for jazz guitar instead. He quickly excelled in the environment that music school offered but managed to remain focused on creating original music in many veins. During his studies at Grant Macewan, Steve played with numerous established local musicians as well as the schools Jazz Combo, and got the opportunity to perform with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra as well as with the Max Roach Quintet and the P.J. Perry Quintet at the Yardbird Suite to name a few. Today, Steve is one of the most in demand guitar players in the Alberta music community. While only in his early twenties, Steve manages to front his own jazz project and is a concrete member of Subtone Music, Alberta's own orignal Neo-Soul/R&B powerhouse group. He has also confirmed rumors of a progressive metal project which so far has been shrowded in secrecy; however, Steve assures us this project "will be a bright star in the future of music as soon as it matures from its fetal stage". With a huge ear for soul and a groove to match, Stephen Frise assures us that the future of guitar playing resides in the heart as equally as it does in the fingertips.
