BRAZILIA TEIMOSA PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION

Recently Batmacumba brought a photography exhibition by Barbara Wagner to the ICA the results of two years worth of research in the local fishing community of Brasilia Teimosa.
Once inhabited by god-fearing fisher folk, the Brasilia Timosa community of Recife is now comprised of a significantly more hedonistic group. With little income, these fun-loving locals follow the notion that their bodies are the greatest asset they possess, flocking down to the beach after a hard days work to bask in the strong rays of the sun. In hedonistic pursuit of physical sensation, these young people of Brasilia Timosa spend all their free time diving in the waters, being carried away by the waves in agile surf rides, playing soccer on ad hoc football pitches and putting the world to rights - activities made all the more pleasurable over a chilled beer and most especially, masses of food.
In a startling exploration of this community Barbara Wagner captures perfectly this hurried essence of living for the moment, so important to the Brasilia Timosa’s happiness and survival. Deliberately intervening with composition so that the scene looks “more like fictional TV narratives than photojournalism” Wagner captures flawed standards of beauty and the wonderfully unrefined behaviour of her subjects. Creating a provocative and revealing expose of a “world that requires enormous strength of character.”
It’s a marvelous body of work with which to celebrate and culminate much of the flavours Batmacumba has gifted the ICA down the years. The Brasilia Teimosa exhibition will remain in the ICA concourse until April 20th. It’s launch meanwhile will no doubt see the ICA bar heaving as DJ Cliffy hosts his inimitable club session, providing tangible evidence as to why Batmacumba has remained at the forefront of the UK/Brazilian music scene for 10 years. Spinning a mix of the newest and most exciting in Brazilian Beats ensuring the carnival atmosphere continues for another 10.
Brasilia Teimosa at the ICA, The Mall, London, 12-20th April
Admission price covers entry to exhibitions, café and bar. Mon-Fri: £2/£1.50 concs Sat-Sun £3/£2 concs

THE STORY OF BATMACUMBA
When DJ Cliffy started Batmacumba 10 years ago at the Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) little did he know that it would become a benchmark for Brazilian culture in London. Back then the Brazilian scene was a niche now it has taken London by storm.
Batmacumba, together with the ICA, forged an alternative vision for Brazilian culture in the UK which still remains at the forefront of the UK scene. DJ Cliffy has taken Brazilian to the four corners of the planet - anywhere people are willing to dig the carnival atmosphere - from Sydney Opera House to Montreux Jazz Festival and more recently Dubai as in the flyer below.
'Ultimately the ICA is not so much a place as a principle. A belief in the new. An Enduring faith in the creativity of tomorrow'
Ekow Eshun, Artistic Director ICA.
The Brazilian revolution in London started at Batmacumba, the longest running Brazilian club-night in England. The original mix of new & exciting music from Brazil has made it one of the most respected nights around. Batmacumba music guests have included Patricia Marx, Max de Castro, Ed Motta, Fernanda Porto, DJ Patife, Gilles Peterson, Spiritual South, Marcos Valle, Azymuth and many more.
Batmacumba is more than just a club-night, it is a multi-media event bringing together films, photography, graffiti, dance, capoeira and much more. Batmacumba has helped many young Brazilian artists break-through in the UK and continues to offer a space for exciting Brazilian culture.
'At any given Batmacumba night, you can expect everything from vintage carnaval bateria crescendos to fresh-off-the-cdr sounds of modern Rio.'
Wax Poetics magazine (USA).
