.. ..Publisher Malcolm Patterson created Against the Grain magazine out of necessity. Malcolm is a publisher, 16-year master barber and owner of Noonie’s House, a thriving barbershop in Houston, Texas. Malcolm has been joined by a stellar executive team who has helped develop and grow the publication. Dwayne Thompson, VP of Marketing and Sales, Hilton LaSalle. VP of Corporate Affairs, Andre Walker, Entertainment and Music Director and many more staff members who contribute to the success of the publication.
After opening the barbershop in 2002, Malcolm immediately began to search for barbershop entertainment for his customers – local and national magazines including barber publications just did not have the editorial he wanted. Finding no magazines specifically focused on the profession of barbering, he started his own in 2005.
Against the Grain is a men’s lifestyle magazine for the barber industry. Malcolm's vision is to elevate and esteem the barber profession to its original highly respected position before Christ (circa 3500 B.C.).Against the Grain is cutting-edge addressing the interests of today’s savvy male and adding flavor to the barber scene. Each issue will take the reader on a behind-the-scenes journey of the barber profession.
Produced quarterly and Houston-based, its readers are discerning educated men and momen, master barbers and those who are just getting started, barber suppliers, and even the mainstream will find the journalism off-the-cuff, bold and enlightening.
