(born November 7, 1990),
Known simply as Mutt, is an
Underground rap artist, (unsigned).Mutt is originally from “romantic Willimantic†Connecticut, a town featured on 60 Minutes, calling it ‘Heroin Town.’ Mutt’s high school published a collection of poetry called ‘Hero In Town’ as a rebuttal. The town of Willimantic is on the upswing, and the local population takes issue with its former rep. Mutt is a modern blend of the people on the planet: Chinese, Trinidadian, Irish, English, Swiss, Portuguese, Carib Indian, Scottish, Venezuelan, Frecnh and East Indian. D’ya get where his name comes from? With a naturopathic doctor father and and Trinidadian mother, Mutt is one of three children all blood related, he is the middle child of two sisters.
Leaving CT in 1997 for Asheville, North Carolina due to his fathers job, a year later his parents mutually divorced. The family before this was “either very loving or it was not†says Mutt. School didn’t seem to be the place for Mutt, running out of first grade and generally being an outsider, Mutt seemed to have a different agenda than his classmates. Thoughtful, not too talkative, with slow, careful speech, he had a couple of good friends but was definitely NOT a run-of-the-mill kid. Having come close to death due to asthma in 1998, Mutt was becoming familiar with lifes’ bittersweet. His mother had moved to a few places in or near by Asheville before she moved in with her sisters in Bowie, Maryland, so in 2003, Mutt and his father and little sister moved back to CT (Mutt’s older sister remained in Asheville). Mutt struggled to find his place in an all-white school system, he experienced the stupidity of racial slurs, “people always fear what looks different.†In 2004 he was stabbed in the arm after a week of disputing with a so-called friend, this attack made him realize even more how cold the world could be, but he never lost hope. The same year he had a gun pulled on him and his friend, when being out late and taking a short-cut through a construction site, “the guy was so drunk I could smell his breath and I was just like damn I’m 14 and I got a gun on me and my boy†said Mutt.
Mutts style in music was influenced by hearing Blues, Funk, Soul, reggae (Bob Marley), Jazz, Swing and his older sister’s interest in the first rap artists, Nas, Tupac, Biggie, Bone Thugs, Ruff-ryders or DMX. He found that his long rhyming improved his breathing and asthma largely became a thing of the past… “Lemons into lemonade Bro.†Mutt’s awareness of how the world turns was affected by his intensifying troubles in school and, through a couple of run-ins with the law, gave him a broad perspective of how people either conform, transform or crash & burn. His open-mindedness and embracing of all people is exemplified by incorporating images of Trinidad, Mexico, and Spain, …envisioning a world of activism and brotherhood.
