About Me

I pretty much hate talking about myself. I live in Austin, it's a great place, I almost like it better than my home town of Annapolis. People are much less pretentious here...that's for sure.
I'm in grad school...some day I'll be done with it. I study Evolutionary Psychology so please don't try to talk to me if esyou don't believe in evolution. I'll have to smack you down...and trust me...I'll win the smack down. I am however always interested in engaging conversations with people who are open-minded.
I'm married...here are my husband and I at the Houston drum corps show (7-29-06) in front of our sweet new car!

My Interests

*I spin flags, rifles, and sabres.
not all at the same time though! :-P
*I currently march senior corps. (www.frontiercorps.org)
*I frequent winter guard shows (www.wgi.org) and drum corps shows. (www.dci.org)
*I teach guard sometimes too. (www.txindependent.org)
*I start drum corps with my friends. (www.renaissancedbc.com)
*I read. I buy most of my books online but there is nothing better than coffee shop reading.
*I lounge around and play video games on my PS2 - but not guitar hero.
*I study evolution copiously. I really mean it when I say don't talk to me if you don't believe in it. I don't think evolutionary psychologists should just study evolutionary psychology. So I read and learn from all sources of evolutionary knowledge. Including Family Guy & South Park :-P

*I am a big fan of getting together with friends, laughing, and playing games. Our newest obsession is trivia night at Mother Egan's. (www.motheregansirishpub.com)
*I am more than slightly obsessed with British culture.
*Music is more than a passion for me - it's my life. You can't be involved in corps/guard for over 15 years and not be obsessed with music, emotions, and it's story.

I'd like to meet:

people in Austin who like what I like :-), evan dando *drools*, fred miller, and anyone with a passion for guard :-)
Wake up! Things can be different!

Music:

errr my playlist never worked right. my new obsession is making playlists for my mp3 player. here's some of what's on there now.
regina spektor
snow patrol
kaiser chiefs
bob dylan
tori amos
arcade fire
shins
amy winehouse
I am very open-minded about music. I enjoy classical and opera as much as I enjoy "pop." I can say that I pretty much loathe twangy country and hard-core rap. To me those genres serve no purpose other than to glorify stereotyped lifestyles. I'll give anything a shot once but if I don't like it - you'll know right away.

Movies:

instead of my favorite movies i'm going to list the movies i've seen recently that i really liked...
steal this movie
puccini for beginners
an inconvenient truth
the last king of scotland
little children
the departed
babel
children of men
who killed the electric car?
when the levees broke: a requiem in four acts
i heart huckabees
hotel rwanda

Television:

TV is one of my worst vices. honestly. and yes I know that's sad.
I like regular channel programming like: LOST, 24, prison break, scrubs, the office, & boston legal
I also do really enjoy reality TV. My excuse is that it's a great snapshot of forced human behavior ;-). My favorite reality TV comes from Bravo but I also enjoy some on MTV, Amazing Race, Hell's Kitchen, some VH1, America's Next Top Model, American Idol and So You Think You Can Dance.
I also really like British TV and it makes me sad that it's hard to get over here :-( (And if you haven't seen Little Britain yet--get on that!)
I realize this makes it appear as though I have no life. :-P

Books:

i read a lot. i used to have a list of my favorite authors but i found that to be lacking. and a comprehensive list would be wayyyyy too long for a site like this. i'm going to give you a book of the month instead.
August 2007 - Stephen King - "Lisey's Story"
Because I flew a lot this month, it's easy to read, and it's a great love story (no joke).
July 2007 - (I've read A LOT of great fiction this month so this was a tough one)
Gabriel Garcia Marquez - "100 Years of Solitude"
Wow. Just wow. And he's the master at magic realism.
June 2007 - Steven Sherrill "The Minotaur Takes a Cigarette Break"
What would Greek mythological beings be like in the 21st century?
May 2007 - Daniel Dennett "Darwin's Dangerous Idea"
Because he looks like Darwin and this book never gets old
April 2007 - Margaret George "Cleopatra"
Yeah that's right sometimes I read fiction too!
March 2007 - Martin Daly & Margo Wilson "Homicide"
Because they rock at stats, it's EP, and what else do you need to know about it?
February 2007 - Jared Diamond "Collapse"
Because you need to know we're in trouble.
January 2007 - Richard Dawkins "The Ancestor's Tale"
Read this. Learn.

Heroes:

My mom--Whenever I think my life is crappy, I remember how hard she had it and how she survived. Thanks Mom for such a valuable lesson!
Chalet - You are divine inspiration to me. I 3 you and am so proud of you. I don't know anyone else who could juggle as much as you do and do it so well.
