...IN LOVE WITH ROCK 'N' ROLL WOAAHH. POST-PUNK is fantastic! taking punk beyond the suffocating limitations that had been forced upon it. punk rock was hardly ever musically rebellious, it generally stuck to the three chord rock n roll formula. of course this was important for its translation of simplisitc yet exciting energy that got straight to business, but meant it generally found its self stuck in a set of reactionary rules that became imposed on it for one reason or another. suffice to say it got boring pretty quickly. post-punk really explores punk's potential musically, and for this reason is very exciting. it rips up the past and pins it back together in true punk fashion ("history is for pissing on!") creating a complete chaos, like situationist art, dada, the avantgarde and pop culture all mixed up with the modern world, political sloganeering, news reports, the sounds of war, the constant bombardment of advertising on the human psychy. this it hangs on a shambolic 'cut n paste' of expressive musical genres of bygone times jazz, dub/reggae, rock n roll, funk, soul, blues, hiphop/rap, disco and so on and so on, and sounds, effects, echoes, screeches, explosions, creating something entirely new that some how seems to reflect our lives, or else our deepest, darkest emotions... well thats what i think about it anyway!
