About Me
I am Spider-Man, the quintessential Marvel character. Although a super hero, I am spared none of the pains and burdens of ordinary life; I experience difficulties with friends, family, sweethearts and employers. My powers enable m e to do good, but not to improve my own lot in life, and it is my simple humanity, rather than my exotic talent, that has won me millions of enthusiastic fans. I am one super-hero who has not lost the common touch, and in fact I am frequently described as "your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man."
In my 1962 d ebut, I took to fighting crime for a reason commonplace in comc books, I was motivated by the murder of a father figure, my Uncle Ben. Yet my driving force is guilt, not revenge; I must live forever with the knowledge that I could have prevented the killing if I had not been so self absorbed. Some say that I suffer from a classic Oedipal complex; in any case I am certainly neurotic, forever agonizing over the choices that confront me when I attempt to do the right thing. Despite my best efforts, I am viewed with a touch of suspicion by those in authority, and am sometimes considered little more than a criminal myself.
Although nobo d y seems to understand me, I have the spirit to be a joker as well as a tragic figure. I am quick with a quip, appreciate the irony of my endless predicaments, and relish the chance to play tricks on people who never suspect that myself and Peter Parker are one and the same (Your discretion on this point is appreciated).
As originally depicted by writer Stan Lee and artist Steve Ditko, I was just a bit of a wimp. Bright, imaginative, but nonetheless an alienated adolescent, I may well have been a typical comic book reader. Although I have matured and gained in confidence over the years, I am still all too human. I miss appointments, catch the flu when I need to fight, forget to put f i lm in my camera and have trouble paying the rent. In short, I remain Everyman, "the super hero who could be you."
Next May, I will face my toughest challenge ever when I face the Sandman and V e nom in Spiderman 3.
